WOODVILLE RACES.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The summer meeting of file Woodvillo Jockey Club will open to-morrow when fields of very fair dimensions promise to be forthcoming and, in view of the close approach of the important holiday fixtures, considerable interest will be centred in the running of a number of candidates who are seeking higher honours later. Tho racing track at Woodville has ever proved an excellent contesting area, and as it is reported to be in good order, some interesting racing should result. The programme for the opening day is as under, tho first event being set down for 11.45 o’clock. MANGA-ATUA HURDLES, of 130 sovs. One mile and a-lialf. '

Of the 11 acceptors in the hurdles, the opening event for the meeting, Revel has had considerable experience in this branch of the game and has proved capable of winning in strong company, the Gay Lad gelding having accounted for such performers as Black Cruiser, Carawock and Enare on the third day of tho C.J.C. meetring last month. Although he has advanced 231bs in the weights, he reads preferable. Peneus possesses greater pace than tho topweight, but whether tho Boniform gelding will prove a jumper will only bo revealed on the day. Private reports state that he can jump, in which event lie may prove troublesome. Santonio is another incomer who will have to be taken on irust, while Gold Peak has little to commend him. Axle appears to have gone right off, but Good Mark and Gurnion may prove capable of putting up good efforts against the topweights. TRIAL PLATE, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Tan Lady Cynthia Colarina Desert King Kalos Doe Truney AVaramau Comedic Vexatious Aston Taranto Kindle Unreasonable Several of the contestants in the Trial Plate have little form to commend them, although Comedic, Lady Cynthia, Tan and Kalos have all filled minor placings on occasions. Comedic early in the season ran second to Starboard Light at Napier Park, being beaten by a head, and had a third to Jazz Baby and General \Vai at Masterton. All of his victors have since proved smart and if in anything like his old form Comedic should make a big bid for the honours tomorrow. Lady Cynthia ran a good second to a smart one in Eka on the second day at Feilding, while Kalos occupied third place on the opening day after experiencing an interrupted run. Truney showed up for a period at Feilding and on firmer going may put up a better performance, but Comedic, Lady Cynthia and Kalos promise to dispute favouritism on the dav.

WOODVILLE HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. One mile and a-quartcr.

Star Stranger has not done anything of note since his return from his successful mission to Australia and with 10.4 does r.ot promise to figure prominently. Tanadees has shown good form recently, his one start at tho New Zealand Cup meeting being productive of a second to Piuthair in the Metropolitan over a mile and a half. A great finisher, the long Woodville straight should suit the Roseworthy gelding as it will the inconsistent Merry Day, who ran two good races at Feilding last week. Nukumai and Kilfaire fought out the honours at Ashhurst when the latter prevailed by a neck. Tho- did not meet at Feilding, for while Nukumai ran second in the hurdles the first day, Kilfaire filled third and fourth berths in the big flat events. With a better run than he experienced at Ashhurst, the wonder dual performer may prove capable of turning the tables on Kilfaire. Novar was taken to Christchurch, but proved a disappointment, but together with Opa, may prove the most serious opponents of Nukumai and Tanadees. FLYING HACK HANDICAP, of 125 sovs. Six furlongs.

Magna Charta will bo making his first appearance for the present season and the King John gelding will, in consequence, have to be taken on trust. Last season lie won the Nursery at Wellington when Hynanna, Seatown, Kiosk, Rascal and Battlement finished behind him. Lin Arlington, Pop Off and Kilmezzo have all recent winning performances to their credit. Pop Off haying won five times in six starts, while Kilmezzo has had two clear cut wins and a dead heat in his last three starts and, in a true run race, it should be a great battle for supremacy. Polonaise has also displayed (consistency by being only once out of a place in four starts, while Bank Draft, Merle, Addlepate, Hypnotic, Royal Time, Bent and Hymill are all useful sorts. Gardant has a handy weight, but the going does not promise to favour the Kilbroney representative, who is a great mudlark. A good race should eventuate with Kilmezzo, Pop Off and Lin Arlington prominent m the running. OETE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Six furlongs.

Clarinda, who has boon directing her attentions to long distance events, is to be given an opportunity to test her sprinting powers, but it is doubtful whether the Kilbroney mare will be able to foot it with the bona fide sprinters over the short course. Royal Damon, who conics next in tho poundages, won well over six furlongs on the second day at Feilding and may well prefer the seven in which lie also claims an engagement. Epistle ran second on the first day at Feilding and may well further improve on that performance, while Penman is due to improve on his recent performances. Startle won at the Poverty Bay meeting in October carrying 7.10, but the company was not particularly strong. Lady Fingers has been disappointing this season, while Bonideer will not hold tho same advantage as he enjoyed at Aslihurst. Plain Sailing, on the minimum, may prove troublesomo to Penman and Epistle,

NURSERY HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Five furlongs.

Cliclone, the topweight in the Nursery, ran third to Frenzied Finance and Tallisker at Wanganui and then finished in second berth to Laughing Prince at vlie Avondale spring meeting. The Leighton—Chelona gelding thus promises to he superior to tho other candidates, who have not revealed the same form in public, although from point of breeding the Absurd —Desert Gold filly, Auratum, should make good sooner or later. Insulation had n run at Feilding, but of the others little is known. BOROUGH HANDICAP, of 150 sovs.

Tiega opened the season in an auspicious manner by accounting for the Seafield Handicap at Wanganui when ho carried 8.11 to victory ahead of Arclieen, Kilia, Kilbrosnyth, Vaward and Co., later running two seconds over a mile and a quarter and a mile and a distance at Napier Park, but at the Hawke’s Bay meeting ran unplaced over a mile with 9.8, Benanee, Polar and Morose being ahead of hint at the post. Polar now meets the topweight on .*Jlbs better terms. Ivillocra, after winning at Christchurch over a mile with 8.3, ran third to Kilfaire and Nukumai in the Ashhurst Cup over a mile and a quarter and, despite the higher poundages, should be .prominent to-mc/rrow. Royal Damon finished so well over six furlongs on the second day at Feilding that ho should see out seven with comfort, while Polar has also proved himself over any distance up to a mile. The lighter weights do not promise to offer any serious opposition and Tiega, Killociira and Polar may be deemed preferable by tho public on the day.

WHARITI HACK, of 125 sovs. One mile and a distance.

Ardfinnan won the Oct

at Trentham on tho second day of tho Masterton meeting with 9.1 on his back, Asleep, who had 9.3, being unplaced. The pair did not meet at Levin, for whereas Ardfinnan ran unplaced over seven furlongs, Asleep won the mile and a distance when ho carried 7.9, No Favours occupying second berth. On that occasion Asleep carried Gibs overweight and the pair now meet again on the same terms. Panart had two starts at the Levin fixture, running second over seven furlongs and third over tho longer distance, but Asleep still has the better of the poundages in comparison. General Wai opened his winning account over six furlongs at Feilding and with Mountain Star appears to be preferable of tho lower division. A good race is promised with Ardfinnan, Asleep and No Favours securing the strongest support.
