FOXTON NOTES

OPENING OF TENNIS CLUB. [Special to “Standard.”] FOXTON, Doc. 6. The Tennis Club’s five new grass courts, situated at the corner of Avenue road and Johnston street, were officially opened on Saturday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr Perreau) in the presence of a good number of spectators and visitors from all parts of the district. The Foxton Silver Band was in attendance and provided music during the afternoon. The president (Mr McMurray) extended a welcome to the visitors and said he was specially pleased to seo Mr 11. N. Watson, pretfdcnt of tho Manawatu Association and the “father of tennis in this district,” present. There was no keener tennis enthusiast than Mr Watson. He was also pleased to welcome Mr J. T. McDonald, of Palmerston North, who had been responsible for the bringing along of many young players. Dr. Hooper, Mr Forgie and Mr Salmon all of Palmerston North, were also welcomed. Mr McMurray then called on the Mayor to officially open the courts. Mr Perreau said he was pleased to see such a largo gathering at the opening of the courts and wished the club every success. The courts were a credit to the members and ho congratulated them on their enterprise. Ho concluded by. calling on Mrs McMurray to drive the first ball assisted by Mr N. Ross, which she did amid applause. Sets were then formed and play indulged in. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies and a most enjoyable time was spent by all.

LATE MR W. SIGNAL. A special anniversary service arranged for Sunday in the Methodist Church, was postponed on rpceipt of the news of the death of Mr W. Signal he being a member of that church. He was very well known in this district where for many years he had been connected with shipping and the port ot Foxton and was at one timo a member of tho Foxton Harbohr Board. He leaves a wife and four grownup children—Mrs G. A. Honore (Foxton), Mrs L. Bullard (Foxton), Mr H. Signal (To Horo) and Mr W, Signal (Wellington) —to mourn their loss.

PRESBYTERIAN SABBATH SCHOOL.

The annual concert and prize-giving in connection with the Presbyterian Sabbath School was hold in the school hall last Friday night and was well attended. The superintendent (Mrs John Ross) and her staff of teachers are to bo congratulated upon the excellence of tho programme submitted and the children deserve special praiso individually and collectively for their contributions, which included instrumental and vocal items, recitations and dialogues. Each pupil received a prize. Mr J. K. Hornblow presided and presented the prizes and congratulated the superintendent, stall and pupils upon the work of the year. Mrs Ross was made the recipient of two tokens of esteem, one from the teaching 6taff in the shape of a tray cloth, and lace handkerchiefs and a box of stationery from the pupils. The latter presentation was made in a neat speech by Miss Joan Thynne. All present thoroughly enjoyed the concert. Pianoforte selections were played by Rosie Munn, Ula Thomson, Daphne Stevenson, Margaret Barron, recitations rendered by Elsie Rout, Alan McKnight, Joan Barron, Lexio Tollison, Douglas Speirs. Daphne Stevenson, May McKnight Mary Thynne, Peace Martin, Shirley Barron, Miriam Symons, Maggie Smith and the season’s greetings by Ron McEwen, songs by Shirley Barron, Peace Martin, Ula Thomson, Rosie Munn, Veda Batson, Mollio Downes, dialogues by Wilfred Symons and R. McEwan, the senior girls, and boys, action songs by the infants and two hymns by tho school. Tho accompaniments were played by Misses Satherley, M. Patterson Rosie Munn, Mesdames Downes and Thomson. A very happy gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem. CROQUET. The results of the handicap single croquet played during the past week are as follow: Mrs Barr (7£) defeated Mrs Downes (9) 26-16; Mrs Moore (6j) defeated Mrs Bill (7£), 26-14. A local housewife was proud of tho fact that a hen had hatched out 17 chickens and a special coop and run were erected. Coming home late the other evening, a noise was heard from the “coop” and several chickens were away from the hen. Upon making a closer investigation several chickens were found to be dead and a large hedgehog was seen nestling close ue hen. The marauder was given a quick despatch.
