SERIOUS CHARGE.
HEARING AT WELLINGTON.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 6. Elizabeth Ann Wylie was charged in the Supreme Court this morning with using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. His Honour Mr Justice Alpers was on the Bench, Mr P. S. Macassey prosecuted and Mr T. M. Wilford appeared for the accused. In opening the prosecutor said that Mrs Davies visited the accused on the advice of Doctor Jacobsen and alleged that an instrument had been used on her, later she died at the Wellington Hospital from peritonitis. He would put in deceased’s depositions. Mr Macassey classfied accused as a menace to the community. He stated that one woman had died and two others were seriously ill from a septic miscarriage. Mr Wilford objected to Mrs Davies’ depositions being put in. Mr Macassey (submitted [that the evidence was admissible and would prove that the accused was a professional abortionist. His Honour ruled the evidence to be admissible.
Detective Murray read depositions which stated that deceased went to accused’s place, where an instrument was used on her.
To Mr Wilford, witnesses stated that they had no knowledge of restoratives being used on deceased while tho depositions were being given. The husband of deceased said that she had never mentioned accused to him. The hearing was adjourned.
