HAWKE CUP MATCH. WIN FOB TARANAKI. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Dec. 6. In a thrilling finish Taranaki _ won the Hawke Cup from Wanganui today. The visitors bad compiled 188 and 178, while Wanganui, collapsing in their first strike for 63, wanted 304 to win when their second innings began on Saturday. Three wickets fell for seven, but a .great partnership botween Bernau and Treadwell altered the position this morning, and four wickets were down for 200 when Bernau completed his century, scored by great batting produced in a crisis. Going on, he ran to 130, but lost partner after partner, eventually sacrificing his wicket in an effort to hit out for the necessary runs. He was magnificently caught_ by Crombie in deep-field after a brilliant innings. Clarke, who bowled steadily all day, was the chief factor in Taranaki’s win. Details: TARANAKI. MANAWATU ASSOCIATION
The fortnightly meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Cricket Association was held last evening when there were present: Messrs W. P. Anderson (in the chair), J. A. Smith, F. L. C. Hubbard, G. Kells and It. E. K. Black. Mr H. Stubbs, Hastings, wrote enquiring whether a representative match could be arranged between Manawatu and Hastings juniors to be played at Hastings during the Christr mas holidays.—lt was decided to endeavour to raise a team to make the trip, Mr J. H. Silson being appointed selector. The Rangitikoi Association wrote accepting to-morrow and Thursday as tho dates for the Hawke Cup match at Marton and asking'that one umpire be brought from Palmerston North, Mr K. IT. Cave, of Wanganui, having consented to act as umpire for the home team. —Mr T. Donaldson was appointed captain of tho team. The Railway Club wrote requesting registration of J. Pegdon, H. Palmer and C. Millen as senior players and Sutton as a junior.—Granted. The Horowhenua Association wrote accepting New Year’s Day as the date for tho match with Manawatu and also forwarding £1 Is, being affiliation fee due.—Received, the match to take place on tho Sportsground. The R.S.A. Club made application for the regrading of Jardine from senior to junior and the registration of R. McDonald as a senior player.— Granted. GENERAL. Mr J. A. Smith, manager of the
Manawatu team which travelled last week to Wellington, reported on the trip, speaking in high terms of the treatment accorded the visiting players, it having been all that could be desired. An enjoyable day’s play had resulted and Manawatu had made an excellent showing against their formidable opponents, Gallichan, Cooper and Kells having performed very creditably with the bat. —The secretary was instructed to forward the Wellington authorities a letter of thanks for the treatment extended to the visiting team. _ I An informal application was received from the Hutt Club for a holiday J match versus a Manawatu team on December 28.—The match was accepted.
Owing to the intervention of the. Christmas holiday, season, it was considered inadvisable to commence a competition game on Saturday week, next, the suggestion being put for-1 ward that a junior eleven bo matched against a senior eleven, and that a further junior eleven oppose a third grade team. The suggestion will be acted upon. Mr _A. M. Ongley was appointed ’ captain of all representative teams for the season whenever he is available. The chairman reported tlrat the High School first eleven would be playing Napier High School at Napier next Saturday, and unless arrangements could be made for the second day’s play of the match with R.S.A. to be doferred till the following Saturday, the school team would have to default against R.S.A.—Mr Smith stated that he would refer the matter to the R.S.A. Club, although he did not anticipate any difficulty in tho matter. . HAWKE CUP MATCH. ALTERATIONS TO TEAM. Owing to Cooper, Diederich, Murdoch and Norris not being available to play against Rangitikei to-morrow and ■ Thursday in the Hawke Cup qualifying match, McMurray, Day, Black and Barrett have been selected to fill the vacancies.
SHEFFIELD SHIELD. SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. VICTORIA. BIG SCORE BY RYMILL. ADELAIDE, Dec. 6. In the. Sheffield Shield match with Victoria, South Australia in the first innings made 481 (Rymill 142). Blackie took seven wickets for 159. Victoria has one wicket down for 116 in the second innings (Woodfull not out 53, Ponsford 54). The weather was fine and the cricket
; good. Rymill opened confidently and > batted brilliantly throughout, scoring > freely with attractive strokes, and hit- ■ ting with power and placing with won- > derful precision.
