CORRESPONDENCE.
WATER SUPPLY.
(To the Editor.) . Sir, —Tho modest request to the Borough Council by ratepayers of Haydon, Keith and Rata streets for water has been turned down by the council r ®| er “ ring it to next year’s estimates. How reminiscent of the child’s game— this year, next year, sometime, etc. During Mr Nash’s Mayoralty I cannot imagine such a reply to a legitimate and most urgent request. Without encroaching unduly on your valuable space may I briefly state the position:— , . (1) The Borough Council is making use of pipe lines laid down by two pioneer residents of Keith street some twelve years ago. Second-hand oneinch pipes were put in, and these are no doubt badly corroded and quite inadequate to feed some thirty connections. . , , „ (2) Hence the modest request from the ratepayers for a four-inch water pipe to connect with the existing fourinch main in Vogel street. Meanwhile, residents of these streets are one-half the time without sufficient water to flush sewers and fill hot water systems. At the time of writing (» a.m.) not a drop of water is available, and the council hint that we may obtain relief next year! There are residents of these streets who for over twelve years have paid full water rates and yet have looked in vain for an adequate water supply. Surely, sir, our Borough Council should meet the bare needs of ratepayers before undertaking to supply water to settlements outside the borough. Thanking you for space to ventilate our grievance,—l am, etc., KEITH STREET RATEPAYER. December 6, 1926.
