For the first time in many years the picture theatres will be peimitted to open for business in Christchurch on Christmas Day. The Marine Department has been advised by the Captain of the Sir James Clark R9ss, the factory ship of the expedition now proceeding to the Antarctic for the summer whaling season, that the vessel cleared the pack ice on Friday night, and the first whale was taken on Saturday. The report added that everything with the expedition was in order. The red flag was hoisted by the Marama on her arrival at Auckland from Sydney yesterday. The cause of the trouble was that on the run across one of the ship’s officers had developed chicken-pox in a mild form and was receiving attention. After the steamer had been boarded by the port medical officer, the launch returned to shore and conveyed the medical officer of health for the district to the ship, which was then granted pratique.
