WIFE TELLS OF BEATING. STONE-AGE WEAPONS. MELBOURNE, Dec. 1. A story of the alleged extraordinary cruelty of a husband towards his wife was told in the Brunswick Court today, when Alfred W. J. Campbell was charged with having left his wife, Moyra Scott Campbell, without means of support. Mrs Campbell said that her husband had beaten her with a sjambok made of rhinoceros skin, the lashes of which were bound with wire.
He wanted her to take a waddy while he held a battle-axe from his collection pf South African souvenirs and fight. She refused, and had to sleep in a paddock. Campbell gave the Bench an undertaking not to further ill-treat his wifo, and the case was adjourned for a week to see if the husband and wife could settle their differences.
