HISTORIC CHURCH
HUNDRED YEARS OLD. SOLD FOR SMALL SUM. MAKING ROOM FOR RAILWAY. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 9, 12.15 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 9. The historic Soots Church has been stripped of all the fittings and sold for £3l and the adjoining manse -for £25/—Press Association. The building, which is situated on Church Hill, is being demolished to make way for the city railway. The church was founded by Doctor John Dunmore Lang, and the first service was held in July, 1826. At the final service held recently prominent Presbyterians from far and near were present, including the daughter of Doctor Lang and representatives of the other four ministers who, during the century, served the church. While the service was in progress, the University Scouts regimental band assembled outside and played “Colin Campbell’s Lament.”
