' HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY.' The Hawke Cup preliminary match between Manawatu and Rangitikei was commenced at Marton yesterday, both sides putting up a poor score in view of the excellent state of tne wicket. Manawatu made 117 in j their first strike .and had secured 10 m the second when stumps were drawn. Rangitikei in their first innings scored 109, T Lyon with 48 being the highest scorer of the day. , , Manawatu won the toss and elected to bat first. ’ Broughton and Aoung opened, facing Sutcliffe and Broad. Ine first over brought a leg bye and Broughton scored two doubles from Broad. In the eighth over, however, he was bowled by Sutcliffe/ Gallichan, tho next man in, opened with a single and knocked one to the boundary before being caught by Le Comte. McSweeney,- who early in his strike survived an appeal for a catch, .following Young’s dismissal, was partnered by Donaldson who scored seven before being caught by Le Comte. McSweeney batted _ steadily nnd had 31 to his credit when Spring came in. Tho latter added one to tho total and then went out l.b.w. Shortly after Kells joined him, McSweeney skied one to Smith. Ingham and Kells contipued batting, the latter going out l.b.w. after having compiled 13. Ingham 11 and Barrett 13 were the best of a tail which did little.

Cameron and T. Lyon opened for Rangitikei, the former being run out for one. Lyon hung on doggedly and survived five batsmen before being run out. Staples J 9 and Smith 20, who fell victims to the bowling of Gallichan and Smillie respectively, were the best of the remaining Rangitikei men.
