LACK OF COMMUNICATION
STRESSED BY DANGEROUSLY
ILL CASE. (Per Press. Association.) GISBORNE, Dec. 9. Representations being made to the Chamber of Commerce regarding telephonic communication with the Portland Island lighthouse had point given them yesterday, when the wife of one of the keepers became dangerously ill and there was no means of summoning help. By chance the scow Koau came in sight and signals brought her close to shore. The woman was carried on a stretcher two miles and down precipitous cliffs and was got aboard safely and brought to the Gisborne Hospital this morning. Had the weather not been exceptionally favourable her removal could not have been effected.
