FIRE BOARD

QUARTERLY MEETING. The quarterly meeting of tho Palmerston North Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, there being present: Messrs A. J. Graham (chairman), S. S. Dean, Simpson, W. A. Parton, M. A. Eliott and W. L. Fitzlierbcrt. It was the last meeting of the boat a under the present constitution, lor m February there will be an election under the new Act, which reduces the present membership of seven tc five. The board now comprises three representatives each of the Borough Council and insurance companies and one cf the Government. From next year there will be one less member representing the council and insurance interests. The financial year w ill end on March 31, instead of June 31. Tho superintendent reported that, during the quarter, calls as follows had been received: —One false alarm, two rubbish fires, one hedge, five chimneys and 21 actual fires. During November 17 calls were received. On account of the cost (£5 or £6) it was decided not to' renovate the tablet at the old station, but it had been removed and would be affixed in vne board room of tho new building. The report dealt with the improvement. or the surroqndings of the new station and mentioned that the present strength of the brigade was 27. Attendances at drills and fires had been satisfactory.—The report was adopted. It was decided, after a discussion on the question of answering fire calls at the Milson settlement (which is out of the borough), to advise the Railway Department that the brigade would answer calls from there at a charge o £5 a time to cover the bare expense. On the motion of Mr Dean, seconded by Mr Parton, a vote of appreciation was accorded the chairman ana executive for their year’s administration. The chairman replied, and extended seasonal greetings to members. The board then passed a vote of thanks to the brigade for its excellent work duriro- the past year. Accounts totalling £298 8s 2d were passed for payment.
