SHANNON. BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. (Special to “Standard.”) • SHANNON, Dec. 9. At the ordinary meeting of tho Borough Council there were present His Worship the Mayor (Mi- E. Butt) Crs. Thwaites. Downes, Richardson, Spencer, Richards," Hyde and Hook. A letter was received from the Kairanga County Council stating that the heavy traffic fees aro to be apportioned one-third to the boroughs and two-thirds to the counties on the mean between tho capital value and the mileage of metalled roads.

Mr J. Linklater, M.P., wrote stating that he had not been successful in getting the Public Works Department to agree to the erection of a bridge over Sheehan street crossing. With regard to an amendment to the Highways Act dealing with a construction subsidy for small boroughs, Mr Linklater stated that he would take the first opportunity of having full justice done to small boroughs. The consulting engineer reported he had visited tho water works, and found that the whole system is operating quite correctly. The influent chamber is in good working order, as also was the galleries. My last instructions had been carried out and a good flow of water was flowing over tho boxes: as the stream lowers its level during the dry weather attention will be necessary to cause tho gallery to function as it should do. Some of the planks of tho top of valve pit were loose and these must bo immediately secured. I beg to again draw the attention of the council to certain matters of work re pipes, etc., as previously reported by me. The council resolved to pay a visit to the headwords early next week. The committee appointed to consider sewerage for Shannon recommended to tho council that a sum be placed bn the estimates next year for the purpose of getting a report and estimate for a sewerage scheme. —Adopted. The building committee reported that the municipal building work is progressing satisfactorily. Most of tho carpentering work should bo finished in a fortnight. The work from now on will be principally confined to the painter. Gr. Hyde referred to posters being displayed on the domain gates. —The person responsible is to be requested to clean the posters off, and if it occurs again action will be taken. Gr. Thwaites said that recently several complaints had been received regarding the present site for nightsoil disposal. His opinion was that the present locality was not at all suitable for this purpose. The residential area was increasing, -and if possible provision should bo made for disposal of the nightsoil on the lower side of the borough.—Left to tho councillors to endeavour to find a more suitable site. On the motion of Gr. Downes, the town clerk was directed to write to the Mayor of Brunner, on behalf of the citizens of Shannon, to express deepest sympathy with the relatives of the victims in the catastrophe that has occurred in his district. His Worship the Mayor has opened a subscription list. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £351 2s 3d.

ASHHURST. [From Our Own Correspondent.] On Tuesday evening a meeting was held in the library to consider matters in connection with the local sub-branch of the Plunket Society. There was a fair attendance, Mrs Romley (president) being in the chair. The question was fully discussed, and as so few had availed themselves of the many good services of the nurse and so little advantage had been taken of her visits here, it was thought that her valuable time and ministrations could bo better used elsewhere, and it was decided to close down this sub-branch at the end of the month. A committee consisting of Mesdames Romley and Hutton and Mr Taylor was appointed to wind up matters. in proposing a vote iof thanks to the general committee, which was carried by acclamation, Rev. Mr Kempthorno voiced the appreciation of the meeting of the splendid work of Mrs Romley (president.) and Mrs Hutton (secretary), both of whom had done their utmost to carry on a service in the interest of the rising generation. The Domain has been booked for picnics as under: Dannevirke South School, December 15; Ashhurst Methodist Sunday School, December 17; Terrace End School, February 4. Mrs W. Cheyne, who is in hospital, is making good progress, and Mrs R. Davis, who is seriously ill, shows a slight improvement. Mr T. Gardiner was suddenly taken ill on Tuesday.
