HAWKE CUP CONTEST

MANAWATU DEFEATS RANGI* TIKEI.

MARGIN OF 92 RUNS

Tlio cricket match between Manawatu and Ilangitikei, to determine who will have tlie right to challenge the holders of the Hawke Cup, was concluded at Marton yesterday in ideal weather, victory resting with the visiting eleven by a margin of 92 runs. Emerging from the first innings with an advantage of eight runs, Manawatu compiled 175 in their second strike to which Ilangitikei replied with 91. Young, the High School player, played a dogged innings for Manawatu, being at the wickets throughout the duration of the innings for his 40 runs, his effort doing much to break the back of the attack of the Ilangitikei trundlers.

With one wicket down for 10 runs, Gallichan and Young resumed their strike yesterday morning, but with the score at 20 Gallichan stepped out to a delivery from T. Lyon and was promptly stumped. With the entry of ' McSweeny a bright display of smart running between the wickets was forthcoming and the total had been doubled when McSweeny, who had been responsible for the major portion of the scoring, put up an easy catch and retired with 20 to his credit. Donaldson failed to stay, but the tail and members proved to be free scorers, Spring registering 15, Kells 19, Day 30 and Smillie 16. Young, who had been at the wickets for approximately four hours, was unbeaten at the close with 40 to his credit. Rangitikei’s opening in reply was not very auspicious, Cameron going at nine and Menvood at 14. With the entry of Miller matters took on a brighter turn for the home team, but with his dismissal for sixth wicket, after having contributed 33 of a total of 59, the end was in sight. Of the later batsmen Lyon and Broad both entered double figures, but a total of 91 left them well short of their objective. By their success Manawatu will now have the right to challenge Taranaki, the present holders, for possession of the trophy. Following are the detailed scores:—

SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH

POOR BOM LING. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, Dec. 9. In the Sheffield Shield match, Queensland, in the first innings, made 577 (Rowe 65, R. Oxenham 134 not out, Gill 64). Morgan took four wickets for 110. New South IVales, in the second innings, has made 152 without the loss of a wicket (Phillips 71 not out, Steele 69 not out). Macartney, who is suffering from a muscular injury to the neck, was unable to play. The game was resumed in fine weather, on a batsman’s wicket. The bowling was very weak, and Oxenham made tlio most of it, rapidly increasing his score from all points. Rowe, on tlie contrary, was very careful, and content to score by singles. The other batsmen treated the bowling with the same contempt as Oxenham. It is many years since a New South "Wales team provided such harmless howling, but the fielding was smart. Oxenliam’s innings was the more meritorious as he "injured a leg yesterday, and had at tlio finish to get a man to run for him. Both Phillips and Steele opened well, and were apparently not troubled by tlie bowling, as runs came quickly, changes in attack having no effect. —Press Association.

New South Wales, in the first innings, made 287.
