WOODVILLE RACES

SUMMER FIXTURE CONCLUDED

HYNANNA WINS GOTHARD MEMORIAL

SPRINT TO NINE OF SPADES

The summer meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club was concluded yesterday in dull, but fine weather, a good second day crowd being 1 in attendance. The track had improved considerably from the opening day, and some excellent racing was again witnessed. , ■ . . . The big flat event, the Gothard Memorial Handicap, furnished onlookers with a very spirited race, two of the lightweight division in Hynanna and Bennanee fighting out the finish with the Awapuni representative, Novar, m third place, the barest of margins separating the first and second horses. While the Railway Handicap, the second leg of the double, was not productive of so close a finish, it was nevertheless an interesting contest, Nine of Spades, who ranked favourite, winning by half a length, with Gold Box the barest of margins behind Royal Damon. The totalisator handled £14,144, as compared with £16,803 last year, making a grand total of £29,463, as compared with £36,832 last year, a decrease of £7469.

PENEUS MAKES GOOD. The 10 horses carded in the Papatawa Hurdles, the opening event for the day, vent to the post, Gold Peak, who had filled second berth on the preceding day, being installed a £25 better favourite than Peneus, who had been a hot order at his first start, with Gurnion six tickets further away. John Nod led from the barrier rise from Peneus and Axle and the trio were still in the van passing through the straight the first time round, Gurnion being next, just ahead of Santonio. Axle went to the front going along the back, while Peneus worked into second place ahead of John Nod and Santonio. Peneus went to the front crossing the top from Axle and Gurnion, the two Awapuni representatives having commenced to drift back. The leader still held command at the bottom of the straight and, although Gurnion‘put in a strong challenge, he could not get any closer than a length and a-half by the time the post was reached. Boy being five lengths away. Gold Peak was fourth ahead of a bunch. Time, 2.52 3-5. FAVOURITE PREVAILS. Taranto was sent out a good favourite in the Novice Stakes in which all nine acceptors fulfilled their engagements, the King Mark gelding carrying over 100 more tickets than Comedic, with a big drop to the third elect. Comedic and Truney were smartest to begin and led right to the turn where Taranto joined the leaders, with Kindle well up. Taranto landed first into the straight with Truney and Comedie in close attendance. The last-named momentarily promised to trouble the leader, but died away badly and Truney came again to take second honours, a length and half a length separating the placed horses, .with a gap of four lengths to Colarino, with Kindle and Elicit next. Time, 1.18.

scene. Gascony drew out, but Mandy finishing strongly got to within a length of the winner, Clielone having to be content with third honours, a similar distance back. Next to finish were Shrewd, Doreo and HygraJe. Time, 1.2 1-5. RACE NEARLY STOLEN. Tiega declined his engagement in the Gorge Handicap in which Killoera, as on the first day, was installed a firm favourite, the Kilbroney gelding being entrusted with 177 tickets more than Penman, with a drop of another 120 to Aeriform. Some delay was entailed in getting the field away, but they, were eventually sent oif in fair line, Penman and Beaumont being the first to break it, with Blonde next in attendance. At the turn for home Killoera and Startlo had worked in behind the leaders, but in the straight Penman drew oiit and looked all over a comfortablo winner. Killoera, however, camo fast on the inside unknown to the rider of the leader anl Penman had to be hurriedly shaken up to win by a head with third horse three lengths away. Attending Blonde were Startle, Beaumont and Polar. Time, 1.13 1-5.

LADYKILLER IMPROVES. Hynanna and Asleep were '.he only defections from the final event for the meeting, the Stewards’ Handicap, the former having- earlier in the day accounted for tiro highest honours in the big flat event. No Favours was the popular fancy with Ladykiller and General AVai next in order, the favourite carrying 130 tickets more than the second elect, with General AVai a further 100 tickets away. At the barrier rise Ladykiller rushed to the front from Gordon Swift, Polyastra, Pop Off and No Favours. Going along the back Pop Off bad joined Ladykiller and the pair made tire pace a merry one. They landed first into the straight where General AVai put in an appearance and, heading off Pop Off, went in pursuit of j.adylciller, but could not overtake the Kilboy: gelding, a length and a half separating them at the post, with Pop Off three lengths away. Next to finish were Mountain Star and No Favours. Time, 2.0.

LIGHTWEIGHTS FIGHT IT OUT.

Nukumai was the only absentee from the Gothard Memorial Handicap, the big flat event for the day, in which the public went strongly for Piuthair and Novar, the former carrying 300 tickets more than the Awapuni representative, with a further drop of almost 200 to the third elect. When the 11 runners were sent off on their mission, Benmure, who had drawn an outside marble, dashed to the front and led passing the official stand from Bennanee, Novar and Hynanna, the other runners being well bunched. Positions underwent little change around the back, but on reaching the bend for home Benmure commenced to come back to His field. In the straight Novar, Hynanna and Bennanee joined issue, the latter pair coming away from Novar, and in a stirring finish Hynanna got the verdict by a head with Novar three lengths away. Then camo Piuthair and Kilfaire together. Time, 1.58 1-5.

IvILMEZZO CONSISTENT.

The big field of 17 runners was presented in the Kiritaki Handicap, a good betting race finding Spode installed first favourite from Kilmezzo, there being a difference of 270 tickets between the pair, with Moepai third choice eight tickets further away. A ragged start saw Royal Time, Spode and Kilmezzo begin smartly and the trio led from Hymgreat and Polonaise. Royal Time landed first into the straight from Spode, Kilmezzo, Polonaise and Riverna, with Merle and Rank Draft closing up. With heads straightened out Polonaise dashed to the front with Kilmezzo in hot pursuit, a fighting finish seeing Kilmezzo secure the verdict in the last stride, Merle being two lengths _ back with Bank Draft, Lady Cynthia and Hypnotic next. Time, 1.2 1-5.

WON FROM END TO END. Piuthair, who had started in the big flat event, was the solo defection from the Railway Handicap in which Nine of Spades was installed a £SO better favourite than Epistle, the latter’s stable companion, Royal Damon, being entrusted with 166 tickets less. While the public’s first selection proved correct, their second choice was astray, for it was Royal Damon which threatened danger at the finish. Nine of Spades was first out, but was immediately joined by Gold Box, with Ladyfingcrs and Standard next. The two leaders were together right to the straight entrance, but with heads straightened out the favourie shot to the front Irom Gold Box, Royal Damon ooming up fast. Tho last-named could not get closer than half a length to Nine of Spades, with Gold Box tho narrowest of margins back after having made a great effort to snatch second honours. Standard, Oreum and Bonideer were the next to finish. Time, 1.16. A PROMISING JUVENILE. Gascony and Chelone were the strong fancies in tho Juvenile Handicap, the former being entrusted with 575 tickets and the latter 537, with a drop of 200 tickets to Mandv, tho other runners being neglected. Chelone and Gascony were the quickest out and early opened up a big break from Shrewd and Mandv. The pair were still well clear at tho entrance to the straight where Mandy came on file
