RUGBY FOOTBALL.

MANAWHENUA v. TARANAKI. TO-MORROW’S CONTEST. With two successive victories to their credit, it is evident that Manawhenua are now displaying s improved form, and to-morrow’s game with Taranaki promises to furnish local enthusiasts with an interesting display. The visitors accounted for Wanganui early in the season, but suffered a relapse of form at the second meeting and had to submit to a severe defeat, However, by their victory over Auckland on Saturday, it is now apparent that that slump in form was merely of a temporary nature and Manawhenua will require to be at their top form to attain their third successive victory. Unfortunately for the homesters, the calls on the Maori members for the Prince of Wales competition has resulted in T. and AV. Parata, Tatann and Johnston being absent from to-morrow’s side, but it is confidently expected that the replacements which have been decided upon will prove worthy of the faith imposed in them. 'TWO TOURING TEAMS. The Taranaki A team arrived in Palmerston North by the south-bound New Plymouth express this afternoon, under the managership of Mr J. Goodwin, but the composition of the team to take the field at the Showgrounds to-morrow was not available up to the time of the “Standard” going to press. The visitors will proceed to Napier on Thursday and will play Haivke’s Bay, East Coast and Poverty Bay before they return homewards. Taranaki will also have a B team on tour at the same time, although they will not depart till eight days later, their first match being versus Rangitikei at Marton on the 18th inst. They will then proceed to Wellington, playing Wellington on the 21st, and return to Palmerston North, where they will link up with the A team on the 23rd.
