SAILORS’ ESCAPADE.
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. Arising from the sailors’ motor escapade on Friday night, Wilfred Jones, of the Diomede, was to-day charged with unlawfully converting t.o his own use a car valued at £l5O, the property of Thomas Ernest Burn, and with having no driver’s license. It was stated that Jones took the car and later picked up two other members of the Diomede’s crew and three girls. After dancing for a while, they proceeded to Brooklyn in tho car and met with an accident. Counsel told the Bench that the Court proceedings would not bo the last of tho matter as accused could still be further dealt with by the authorities on the ship. The naval authorities had assured counsel that they would see that the damage was paid by instalments. It was estimated at £l4O. Mr McNeil, S.M.: That, of course, would be a matter for a civil claim. Counsel said that it would not go to the length of a civil claim. Whatever was fair and reasonable accused would pay. Of course, with a car valued at £l5O they could not accept £l4O as the damage without going further into the matter. A fine of £5 was imposed.
