SENSATIONAL RUN. (United Service.) WARSAW, Sept. 8. Pietkiewioz, a young Pole caused a sensation at the national athletic meeting today. He ran three kilometres in Bmin. 5 l-ssec., beating Nurmi, who has resinned racing after a year’s cessation by a yard. Nurmi, however, beat Piotkiewicz in a four-mile race by 30 yards. Tho time taken was 19min. 35scc. CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP. HOBART, Sept. 8. The 10,000 metres cross-country championship of Australia was won narrowly by A. J. Hillhouse, of Melbourne University in 33min 23sec. from W. Banvick, Tasmania, whose time was 33min. 25sec. R. Wright, Now South Wales, was third in 34min. 30sec. Team honours were won by New South Wales from the holders, Victoria, with Queensland third. WALKING CHAMPIONSHIPS. SYDNEY, Sept. 8. Tho State walking championship of seven miles was retained by F. O. Chapman, who led from the start, heading T. H. Daintry by 50 yards at the finish. The time was 54min. 20sec. The women’s half mile walk title was retained by Miss L. Carrington, of Penrith. who defeated Miss M. Winstanlcy, Botany, in 4min. 7sec. A NEW RECORD. (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, Sept. 8. The British half-mile and mile champion, C. Ellis, ran 1000 yards in 2min. 11 l-ssec., beating by one second the world record created by L. Brown, of America.
