(From Our Own Correspondent). MARTON, Sept. B.' Fire destroyed a four-roomed wooden dwelling on the borough boundary, Wanganui Road, Marton, shortly after 11 o’clock last night, the brigade being unable to rendor any assistance owing to the absence of a water supply. The house, which was occupied by a Mrs J. Gibbons and family, who were absent when the outbreak occurred, was situated within the borough but was not connected to the water supply. The value of the property was about £6OO and it was covered by insurance. The contents were not insured and nothing was saved. The flames came in contact with a power lino and caused some trouble in an adjacent transformer, but the damage was speedily remedied. A bus carrying a party of Marton residents who had been visiting Wanganui broke diown on the Turakina Hill while on the return journey on Friday night. The party got homo at two- a.m. after walking into Turakina. Described by the police as loafers and cadgers, Leslie Ray Koeghan and Conrad Christensen, of no fixed abode, appeared in the Court at Marton yesterday, the former charged with theft and being idle and disorderly, and the latter with being a rogue and a vagabond. Keoghan had fivo previous convictions. Both were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. They had been making a nuisance of themselvo3 in tho town since the races started. About 108 card players attended the euchre party promoted by Loyal Hautapu Lodge, Taihape, the first prizes being won by Miss ltiordan and Mr Liddicoat. Consolation awards went to Miss B. Cullen and Mr K. Hartley. A successful dnnee was held at tho residence of Miss Bailey in aid of the Putorino School funds, music being provided by Messrs Allen and S. Signal. A fair amount was collected.

Miss L. M. Batten, acting-town clerk at Marton, is resigning shortly to go to the Argentine where she is to be married. Miss L. Hogan, formerly supervisor in the telephone exchange at Marton was a visitor to tho town last week. Miss Helena Jane Runciman, who died at New Plymouth last week, was a sister of Mr George Runciman, a well-known Marton resident. The interment took placo at Marton. Miss V. Craven has been appointed teacher at Putorino School. Mr F. F. Hockly is to open tho Huntervillo flower show this month. Mrs E. J. Wilde, “Mirfield,” Marton, is ill. Mrs R. H. Halse, of South Makirikiri, Marton, is an inmato of a private hospital. RUGBY FOOTBALL. Tho Handy Charity Cup match played at Marton yesterday between Athletic and Rata,was a very tame affair and not until ten minutes from time were the spectators given anything like tho exhibition they could expect from these teams, which are tho leaders in tho senior competition. In tho first spell O’Stcn and Dawbin scored tries for Athletic, and Rata retaliated in the second half with tries by G. Hartley and Downs, the latter’s effort being improved upon, thus giving Rata the trophy by 8 points to 6. Tho passing on both sides was very erratio and for tho greater part of the game tho players seemed to take tho encounter in a picnio spirit. Tho third grade 6evon-asido competition at Turakina was won by Old Boys who accounted for Halcombe B by 26 points to nil in tho final. Teams were entered by Turakina, Athletic, Old Boys, Huntervillo and Halcombe. ' Tho teams in the final were: —Old Boys: Hawkins, Lambert, T. Lyion, M. Lyon, Taaffe, Campbell ’ and Stent. Halcombo B: McGreal, Hughes, Seigel, Cooksley, Williams, D. Hughes and Blunden. MARTON, Sept. 9. Mrs W. Scott Cameron returned to-day to Marton from a holiday in Sydney. Miss R. Simpson, of Marton, is visiting Mrs R. L. Gibson, Wanganui. Mrs F. Parkes, of Pukekohe, is tho guest of her daughter, Mrs G. C. Noble, of Taihape. Mr E. J. Rowe, of Westport, has commenced business in Taihape. Mr C. Buckland, of Ohutu, has taken over a farm near Levin. Mr J. W. Kendall, of Taihape, is spending a holiday in Bulls. Mrs D. R. Greig, of Marton, is a visitor to Wellington. Miss F. H. McCall, headmistress of Wellington Diocesan School for Girls, Nga Twa, Marton, is spending the present vacation in tho South Island. Mrs D. Johnson, of Utiku, is visiting Auckland. Mrs L. Hoskings, of Taihape, is in Napier. Mrs 11. Hesketh, of Taihape, is the guest of her mother, Mrs C. Broughton, of Bulls. Miss D. Barrell, of Mangaweka, is spending a holiday in Ohutu. GENERAL. Bidding on some lines of sheep was 1 somewhat dull at tho Marton stock sale to-day, but lines showing condition brought satisfactory prices to vendors. The top price was 37s 6d for a lino of under 100 ewe hoggets, offered by Mr L. Neumann, and the same vendor got 37s for another lino of ewo hoggets. In many cases tho prices were below the values of the ani- 1 mals last autumn. i The Ohutu School Committee has do- j nated £4 to the funds in aid of the Taihape dental clinic. i The positions of the candidates in the Marton queen carnival on Saturday evening were: Sports 32,400; town 36,240. Munro; selection committee, the patron, president, and captain. Mr A. G. Harris, of Marton, suffered a painful injury to his eye when chopping wood. Part of a log was chipped off and flew up, striking tho optic with some force. The insertion of several stitches was necessary. Tho two jockeys, M. IF. Nicol and E. Stnnway, who wero injured when their mounts fell at the Marton races last week, are making good recoveries. Two pupils of St. Stephen’s day school, Marton, filled fourth and twelfth places respectively in tho Wellington Manufacturers’ Association’s essay competition, “Why Wo Should Buy New Zealand-made Goods.” They are Joan Rickman and Corah Harris.
Charged with being drunk and disorderly and with uskig obscene language, a wellknown Martif.i Maori, Ramai Poari, appeared in tho Polico Court to-day, and on tho first count was convicted and discharged and on tho second sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Accused had created a disturbance at tho Municipal Pictures on Saturday evening.
