FARM LANDS.

EFFECT OF OTAKI BILL. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 9. Mr W. H. Field. M.P. for Otaki, introduced an Otaki deputation to the Minister of Internal Affairs regarding the effect that the Otaki Borough Adjustment and Farm Lands Rating Bill will have on certain farm lands now proposed to be included in the borough. It was stated that the farmers who would be included in the borough under the new proposal would suffer a grave injustice owing to the heavy borough taxation from which they would receive no benefit. If the Government decided to go on with the bill, those affected would petition Parliament. Mr Martin Luckie, who accepted for the deputation, explained the position in detail. He said that the settlers at great cost had got their properties excluded, and now it was proCosed to reinclude them. If the bill ecame law, it would lead to a great deal of litigation. There were nine farmers in the excluded area and only three who would benefit from inclusion. The borough had spent £14,000 on a drainage system that did not drain anything. Otaki was the most stagnant borough in New Zealand. The Minister said that he would go carefully into the whole matter.
