LABOUR SECRETARY

3 P.M. EDITION

• DAMAGES AWARDED. LABOUR WEEKLY TO PAY. Received September 11, 11.5 a.m. MELBOURNE, Sept. 11. For libel which the Chief Justice described as “vindictive and cowardly,” Mr Sylvester Hardiman, the secretary of the Sydney branch of the Australian Labour Party, was awarded £3ooo—the full amount claimed —from the Workers’ Weekly, a Sydney publication. The defendants were ordered to pay all the costs.

Under the sub-title, “Scab union organiser,” it was stated that Mr Hardiman was in contact with the underworld, and that when any dirty work was to be done he mobilised the slum elements.
