CANDIDATES FOR WANGANUI.
TRACK WORKERS AT AWAPUNI,
(By “Binocular.”)
Awapuni will bo well represented at the Wanganui meeting, a teuni of approximately 20 odd horses being due to make tho trip from this centre. Unfortunately for mentors, steady rain on Monday night left the tracks heavy for operations on Tuesday morning und the times were m consequence slow.
Two of the local candidates in the Maiden Race at Wanganui in King Hal und Winlock had Pari, a stablo companion of tho latter, as a partner over half a mile on the grass proper. Pari failed to handle the going and King Hal and Winlock were woll clear at tho close of their task which was accomplished in 57 l-ssec.
Roundelay (T. Metcalfe), alone, ran home from tho half mile peg in 58 sec. Since running second to Last Mark in tho Novice Handicap at Trentham, tho Limond gelding has gone on tho right way, and, while tho Wanganui course may not bo to his liking, he should run a good race.
Novar, Sunart and Askari aro a trio of locals for tho Okehu Hurdles on the opening day at Wanganui. Novar was the only one to jump yesterday morning, tho Sarto gelding, with C. Robinson up, doing a round over tho battens in good style. Sunart and Glyn Dhu galloped six furlongs with substantial poundages in 1.28 2-5, while Askari bowled along over a round with a lightweight in tho saddle. Tho lust named has apparently taken on a now lease of life.
Awapuni holds a strong hand in the Putiki Handicap with Disrank, Desert Lad, Arrowhead, The Masher, and Trigratio. Disrank had Killogio as a partner over half a mile, the last three furlongs being left behind in 45sec. Killogic was, however, of littlo uso to Disrank. Arrowhead (W. Brown) and Rouox (W. Taylor) ran six furlongs in 1.25 1-5, being together at tho close; Desert Lad (Metcalfe), alone, ran fivo furlongs in 1.11, while Tigrano was restricted to threequarter pace work. Tho Masher, who is a comparatively recent arrival at Awapuni, required 1.16 2-5 for fivo furlongs, the last three, however, being left behind in 45sec.
Rouex and Glyn Dhu arc tho only locals figuring in tho Seafiold Handicap. The former has now been in work some time and has been showing steady improvement, but whether he is ready to give of his best is problematical. Glyn Dhu fulfilled his task with Sunart in attractive enough style, although the time was nothing to enthuse about.
Tho ex-Aucklander Brilliant Light (Voitrc) had Keddar (Metcalfe) ns a companion over six furlongs which distance was accomplished in 1.25 R the last three furlongs taking 44isoc. Both finished well and tho former will be found in the Doric Handicap to-morrow, with Keddar in the open sprint. Blue Paper, who is also engaged in the Durio Handicap, had Black Acre as a companion over three furlongs, but the latter was of little use to tho Paper Money filly, who strode home alone in 42 2-sscc. There is, however, a possibility that Blue Paper wdl not run till the second day, while the nature of the going will determine the movements of Pari. Lucky Bag will not make the trip.
Blimp, who is down to compete in the Murangai Handicap, was restricted to three-quarter pace work on tho grass. Otairi (R. G. Stratton) had Piuthuir (K. Voitrc) as a partner over six furlongs which were left behind in 1.25 2-5. Piuthuir, with her lighter weight, appeared to be holding her companion at the finish despite the fact that tho going was in the Paper Money gelding’s favour. The Kilbroncy mare disappointed at Marton and she does not figure at Wanganui tomorrow.
Moutoa Treasury (R. G. Stratton) had King Acre (K. Voitrc) as a partner over five furlongs. The pair raced on terms into tho straight, but tho Flying Handicap candidate then drew away from the thrcc-ycar-old to complete her task in 1.9, tho last three furlongs being run in 42 l-ssoc. Some difficulty is being experienced in sc,, suring a suitable rider for tho Paper Money marc, and if such is not forthcoming she may be an absentee on the opening day.
Nimble and Gesture from Mrs McDonald’s establishment, Sporting Chance from W. Bailey’s stable, ( and tho Night RaidSea Maid youngster from G. New’s will in all probability bo given an outing in the Debutante Stakes on the second day. Nimble and Sporting Chaneo were the winners of tho respective heats in the two-year-old parade at Marton ,but tho ruccbook incorrectly stated that tho latter was from G. New’s stables. While the local sportsman, Mr C. T. Keeblc, has Blimp, Lucre, Lucky Bag, Lucretia and a youngster or two in New’s stable, lie hus Sporting Chance and Adventus in W. Bailey’s care. The latter mentor may take Adventus and Grand Chaco (Royal DivorceFootstep), who is a half-brother to Bulolo. also through for tho second day.
Lucre, who won tho Maiden Raco on tho opening day at Marton, pulled up lame after contesting the Farewell Handicap tho succeeding afternoon and he has been turned out. This heavy-topped horso has recorded some great times in his track efforts, but unsoundnesfl has restricted ' his activities. G. W. New has, however, again taken up another of the same family in Lucretia, who has been spelling, and the Chief Ruler —Marceleno filly, who had to be accorded a let-up as a result of her meeting with a mishap while galloping round tho paddock.
Kilorcll, who has quietened down considerably as the result of road work in addition to patient pottering about on the tracks, will race on the second day at Wanganui. The Kilbroncy gelding has benefited by the treatment and he should fare better in his future racing engagements.
HORSEMEN AND HORSES. Tho following riding engagements have been announced where Palmerston North horsemen ami horses aro concerned:— C. Duvis.—-The Masher. C. W. France. —Armoyer. C. Robinson.—Novar. A McDonald.—Peshwa. R. G. Stratton.—Nimble. W. Broughton.—Winlock. B. 11. Morris.—Disrank. J. Barry.—Otairi. A. E. Ellis.—Sporting Chance. A. G. Murray.—Kilorcll (second day). W. Brown.—Arrowhead, Grand Chaco. K. Voitrc.—Pari, Maui, To Atiawa, Gesture. T. Metcalfe.—Air Laddie, King Hal, Desert Lad. H. Goldfinch was engaged for Roundelay in the Maiden, but with a minimum of 7.7 it is doubtful whether lie can do the weight. 11. Burt, who sustained concussion at the Taranaki Hunt meeting, was fulfilling track duties yesterday morning and lie will bo socking engagements at Wanganui. A. E. Stratton, who suffered a fall on Sunart on the second day at Marton, met with shoulder injuries und another pilot will have to be found for Sunart in consequeneo at Wangunui.
THE WANGANUI MEETING.
COMMENT ON THE FIELDS.
(By “Binocular.”)
Proceedings will open at the Wanganui spring mooting to-morrow with the Maiden Race in which 23 candidates aro carded, several of whom havo already recorded very fair performances. Juggle, Potoaform, Annioyor, Whenuatonga, Glenison, Roundelay, Pats’ Boy, Ross Ferry, Duellona and Equitant arc all likely sorts, and if all to to the post tho favourite may come from Juggle, Roundelay and Pat’s Boy. This event is timed for 11.45 o'clock.
There aro 15 candidates carded in tho Okehu Hurdles, Glengariff, who heads the weights, being 21bs. in advance of the well performed Elysianor, with tho Awapuni representative, Novar, 91bs. further away. Other dangerous candidates lower down tho scale aro Princo Lu, Fine Acre, Airtight, Thurnbell, Peshwa, Lady Gay and Modern. The day may find Elysianor, Fine Aero and Thurnbell in demand bypatrons. Royal Black, who has shown consistency oven though his actual successes have been somewhat restricted, heads the weights in the Putiki Handicap, but tho Royal Stag gelding might find the poundage .of 8.8 more to his liking. Attending him are the two local candidates, Disrank and Desert Lad, both of whom are in good order, while lib. below tho latter is the northerner, Black Moire, who is due to show improved form. Shrewd, Balloon, Metellus, Kiriana and Tourist have all fair records, although somo of them have been off the scene of action for some little time, and Royal Black, Black Mairo and Disrunk might rank higher in tho betting market.
Royal Game is a double acceptor, be figuring in the Mnrangai Handicap, ns well ns (lie Seafield Handicap, but should the Royal Stag horse start in tho shorter event ho will not be without friends. Form i 3 not very well disclosed in respect to tho majority, but Gold Cure, Ramoses and Havering promise to bo a likely trio. As is not unusual, the Wanganui Guineas furnishes a very small field and tho totalisator will suffer in consequenco of there being less than six entries. Probably Eaglet will be installed a firm favourite, although Admiral Drake will not lack friends, even though his rider docs not greatly appeal. While Knightliko should havo benefited by the outing at Marton, the in the Durio Handicap will bo encountering some useful sorts lower down in the weights. The distnnee may bo a little short for Royal Lineage, but Brilliant Light, Valprc, Ex Dono, Zarene, Blue Paper and M.onaloff are very useful over the distance and, when tho machine closes, Brilliant Light, Zarene and Valprc might bo tlie order of favouritism. Tho Marungi Handicap finds several of the candidates with their true form undisclosed, and whether tho majority of the topweight division arc up to concert pilch is problematical. Blimp, Otairi, Spearmiss and Royal Game are four in tho middle division w'ho cannot be overlooked, while Maui should find 7.4 luxurious. Royal Game, Blimp and Spcarmiss may contest tho post of favourite. The second leg of tho double finds Rcicmoana, Laughing Princo and Benzora all on the 9.0 or over mark with Silvcrmino lib. away-. Interest will be centred in the appearance of tho last named for he has raced well on the Wanganui track previously, although ho has not figured in public recently. Prince Humphrey will no doubt have friends, although many may prefer to support their fancy in the Eclipse Stakes on the second day Tho Raider, Keddar, Lady Quox and Consent will bo coming in fresh, and with Kaiti, First Money, Moutoa Treasury, Tc Atiawa and Banket all possibilities, betting might tako a wide range. Silvcrmino, Moutoa Treasury and Lady Qucx may .conic in for support.
CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club to bo hold on September 28 - close with tho secretary, Box 13, Hastings, on Friday night at eight o’clock. A forfeit of 1 sovs. for the Hawke’s Bay Guineas is also payable the same evening.
AUSTRALIAN RACING. SYDNEY, Sept. 10. At the Rand wick tracks to-day the New Zealander Night March, with Nedda as a companion, did a sterling mile in lmin. 42scc., with tho flags out twenty feet. Paquito did a mile on the tan in lmin. 43£ sec., and left Arikinui well behind. Winulot had the better of Mollison by a length over nine furlongs in ltnin. 565300. Limorick took lmin. 30sec. for seven furlongs and walked off lame. Inducement lias injured a foot and has caused a sensation among racing men.
