The N.Z. Timber Merchants’ Federation advised that it had recently considered the proposed Timber Efficiency Bill and had carried the following resolution;—“That the Timber Efficiency Bill be strenuously opposed, it being in the opinion of the meeting an unwarranted attempt to interfere with private enterprise.” A precis of the proposed bill was enclosed and expressions of opinion requested. Mr W. McKenzie stated that, if tho classifications came into force, it would take an army of experts to explain them, and the timber yards in New Zealand would have to be doubled in size to cope with the number of classes. The bill was a movement on the part of the sawmillers to get rid of the whole log without waste. The letter was received. WHEAT INDUSTRY.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce forwarded a copy of a circular from the secretary ot the Parliamentary Committee appointed to inquire into tho wheat industry and advising that, it the chamber desired to tender any. evidence, it should communicate with the secretary of the committee. The chairman stated that a committee had been set up by the House to inquire into the wheat industry. •The Associated Chambers of Commerce had been notified o ftheaction and chambers were given the opportunity to express their opinions. However, the local Hour milers were taking action in the matter and it was felt that tho chamber could not greatly assist at the moment. No action was taken. GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote expressing gratification that its article on State taxation and expenditure had aroused interest in Palmerston North. It was sincerely hoped that the constructive suggestions made with regard to the reorganisation oi Government expenditure would not faU upon deaf ears, as the future prosperity of New Zealand was very intimately connected with Government expenditure.—Received.
