(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 11. Captain and Mrs Matheson, of the local Salvation Army, have received notico from national headquarters of their promotion to the rank of Ensign. Mrs I. Rc66 returned to Napier on Monday after spending a few days’ holiday with Mr and Mrs Jno. Roes, of Thvnno Street. The many Foxton friends of Rev. C. K. Aitken will regret to learn that ho has been seriously ill at his home at Sumner. The latest reports are that his condition is improving. A slight earthquake, lasting somo seconds, was experienced locally at 6 o’clock last evening. The m.v. Foxton left port for the south on Saturday and returned last night with a general cargo. A meeting of the Foxton Beautifying Socioty was held on Monday evening, presided over by the president (Mr M. E. Perreau). It was decided to apply to the Foxton Borough Council for a grant to meet current expenses. The question of raising funds was discussed and it was decided to hold a shop day at an early date. On Saturday afternoon the men’s team of the Levin Golf Club visited Foxton where they met a local team on the Herrington Golf Links. The scores were as follow, Foxton players being mentioned first: —M. B. Bergin beat Adams; J. Newton, junr., halved with Todd; C. M. Hewott halved with Brown; A. P. Easton lost to Bull; D. R. Ogilvy lost to Philips; F. A. Maaon lost to Percy; J. Newton, senr., lost to Smaill; W. H. Walton beat Davis. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening, being presided over by Mr M. E. Perreau (Mayor). The treasurer reported that during August the sum of £1321 13s 5d was received and banked as follows: —District Fund account, £1303 13s sd; cemetery account, £lB. The amount of gas manufactured during August was 388,500 feet, which, with the amount in the holder on August 1, 17,000 feet, made a total of 405,500 feet. During the month 328,100 feet was used by consumers, 20,000 feet at the works and there was 17,000 feet in the holder on August 31, making a total of feet accounted for and leaving 40,400 feet, representing 10 per cent., unaccounted for. Thirtythree tons nine cwt. of coal were carbonised, yielding 11,600 cubic feet of gas to the ton and producing seven tons of coke. The receipts for the month totalled £l7B 19s and the expenditure £212. ss. The poundkeoper reported that six head of stock were impounded during the month gnd 5s driving fees collected. Accounts amounting to £1656 Os 3d were passed for payment. The Mayor referred to tho amount of money outstanding on the books in the way of unpaid rates and said that somo drastic action would have to be taken to get the money in. The General Manager of Railways wrote in reply to the board’s request for a light over the cattle yards on the wharf, stating that the department had decided to install tho electrio light at the local railway station during the current year, when the request would bo acceded to.
It was decided to make a donation of £25 to tho Foxton Beautifying Society. Tho Shannon Dairy Coy. is to be granted permission to erect a milk stand in Norbiton Road, subject to the approval of a site by the works committee.
