Mr J. Garde Grimsliaw, of Palmerston North, has been invited to adjudicate at the Auckland competitions next month.
Mr Jas.' Wallace, whose illness necessitated his entering a private hospital, is reported to be making excellent progress towards recovery. Mr and Mrs H. N. Watson and Miss S. Watson, who returned to New Zealand from England at the week-end, arrived in Palmerston North yesterday from Hawke’s Bay, where they had been spending a few days.
The death occurred at Napier yesterday of Mr A. E. Horne, a wellknown resident of the district. The late Mr Horne, who up to the time of his death was licensee of one of the Napier hotels,awas formerly at Hastings and New Plymouth.
Sympathy with Mr and Mrs H. E. Redstone, formerly of Frederick Street, in the death of their son, who was a pupil of the school, was expressed at the meeting of the Terrace End School Committee last evening, and a resolution of condolence with the bereaved parents was passed. At the meeting of the Terrace End School Committee last evening a resolution of condolence was passed with Mr W. H Brown, secretary of the Central School Committee, in the death of his wife. It was decided to forward to 21 r Erown a letter expressing deep sympathv with him in his sad loss.
Dr. George H. Uttley, at present principal of the Wairarapa High School, has been appointed rector of the Southland Boys’ High School (states a Press Association message from Invercargill). Dr. Uttley will oommence his duties in February of next year. There were twenty applicants for the position. Reference was made at the meeting of the Terrace End School Committee last evening to the Himatangi fire tragedy, the headmaster stating that the late Mr Samuel Thompson was an ex-pupil of the school. The committee passed a vote ot condolence -with the bereaved parents and decided to forward them a letter of sympathy. Dr. Paul Uuderberg, a doctor of political economy from Germany, arrived this week on Iris first visit to New Zealand. Ho intends to stay here only a week or two, and has come to see the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park. Dr. Underberg has been away from his home in the Rhineland for over two years, and during that time he has visited 40 countries. A welcome on his return to the council table was extended by the chairman, Cr. Campbell, at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council, to Cr. McElroy, who has been on a two months’ health recruiting trip to the South Sea Islands. The chairman expressed the hope that Cr. McElroy’s improved health w;ould enable him to long give his valued services to the Oroua County. Cr. McElroy suitably replied.
