Air Priest, as a member of the visiting committee, reported on several matters in connection with the school, and stated that the caretaker was to be complimented on his work. The headmaster was authorised to expend 26s on books for the school library, the sum including 12s 6d won by a boys’ tug-of-war team and 12s 6d Bubsidy from the committee. Air Priest suggested that each year a sum be placed at the disposal of the headmaster for the purpose of augmenting the school library. Tho chairman stated that liberal provision had been made from the funds for the purchase of library books anfl considerable sums had been expended in the past. He suggested that the books in each room could he listed and the number added to when funds were available. The headmaster stated that the 6chool was rather well provided with reading matter, but the proposal was to have a separate library for each class, the number of books corresponding to the number of pupils. The old method of oral reading had to a certain extent been replaced by silent reading in order that the subject matter might be absorbed. That created a demand for good books, and when funds were available additions to the library would always be welcome. “We have the nucleus of a good library now, but we have not enough books to go round,” stated the headmaster. Mr Thompson undertook to make an inventory of the existing books and to give an indication of the requirements of each class. Afessrs Petersen and Smith were appointed a visiting committee for the next month. A sub-committee was appointed to inspect the school baths and to arrange for repainting. Accounts amounting to £l3 19s were passed for paymentCongratulations were extended to Air Priest on entering into business, and he was wished every success iu liis new venture.
