Manawatu had tho better of the early exchanges, Wang|anui playing against the wind. Handley got the ball away smartly, but Bramwell chose to kick instead of passing to his backs. Wanganui opened their account first when Handley secured from a scrum at midfield and came round the side to send Greer away, but the home full-back, McGonagle, was equal to the occasion and play returned to Manawatu’s twenty-five, where for offside play the visitors were penalised. Manawatu kept the play in neutr. 1 territory and Lane, receiving the ball from the ruck, made a bright run out to Greer, but a golden opportunity was lost.
