FEILDING

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Sept. 13. The monthly meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) presiding. Also present were Crs. Collins, -.uCorkindale, Hill. I’earco, Stewart, Guy, Fair, and Prydc. All apology for absence was read from Cr. Corpe. Authorisation was "iven for the payment of £44 to the Foxton Harbour Board, being the council’s share of the special rate to the'board. The question of extending the hours the Jubilee Building rest room is open, was left in the hands of Cr. McCorkindale and the town clerk to deal with.

The works committee reported that it had gone into the question of putting a footpath across the South Street railway crossing and was of the opinion that a path was not warranted. It was decided to purchase a weed burner at a cost of £l7 10s for burning the weeds off footpaths and channels, etc. The adoption of the proposed amendments to the Abattoir, Slaughtering and Inspection Act was recommended by the abattoir committee. During the month of August, 1929, 106 cattle, 440 sheep, 8 lambs, 96 pigs and 5353 bobby calves were dealt with at the municipal abattoir. The fees amounted to £269 0s 9d, as compared with £312 19s 6d for the corresponding month for last year; a decrease of £43 18s 9d. The librarian (Mr A. Farmer) reported that 244 subscribers changed 1483 books at the Municipal Library during August. With regard to a petition received from residents in Manchester Street, asking for an additional street light to bo installed on the north side of the Makino stream, the street lighting committee considered that there are already sufficient lights in Manchester Street, and therefore could not recommend that the request of the petitioners he granted. The borough engineer reported that the Beautifying Society had donated 13s 7d towards purchasing flower seeds for Kowhai Park. The District Nurse Committee was granted the use of the spare room in the council buildings, free of charge, for its monthly meeting. In regard to a request that permission be given to the district nurse for the erection of a house on a section in Lytton Street smaller than the minimum sized section allowed for in the borough by-laws, it was decided to grant the request subject to the necessary authority being found in the bylaws.

In regard to the supply of water to the Feilding High School baths, it was decided to instal a meter at the baths and charge 6d per 1000 gallons for a period of one year from date. The original conditions of , supply were adhered to. FINANCE COMMITTEE. “That Mr W. H. Bryant be thanked ter alia, as under: The finance committee reported, infor his offer to lend a sum of £2,000 to the council, and he be informed that as no money will be required by the council for some months, nothing can be done in the matter at present. That with reference to the matter of rates outstanding on a property recently reverted to the Crown, on which the Commissioner of Crown Lands has decided not to pay arrears of rates, all correspondence be referred to the Mayor and the town clerk to take up 'with the Minister concerned. That the sum of £3 16s Od, arrears of rates owing on Lot 19, Sec. 85, Glasgow Terrace, be written off the books of the council.” —Adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Tho borough engineer (Mr T. K. Hay) reported, inter alia, as follows: —“The work during the month has consisted mainly of street metalling and carting to dumps. The grader has been used frequently, trimming up road surfaces. 189 cubic yards of metal were used for street maintenance ; 260 cubic yards were carted from the river to dumps; 63 loads of refuse were removed; 36 feet of concrete channel crossings were constructed and 32 feet of pip© crossings were laid. In accordance with a request from the Public Works Department, three reinforced concrete piles have been constructed at the Aorangi Bridge site The following works have been completed : Footpath in Gladstone Street at railway crossing; footpath, Montague Street; river protection, Johnston Park. This completes the scheduled works with the exception of the Victoria Park drain and the Kowhai Park drain. At the present time two men are employed on relief work, in addition to three others just recently employed under the Returned Soldiers’ account. Tho following permits were issued during the month: Building, 12; miscellaneous drainage, 11; to open asphalt 3; sewer connection 4. Total value £4419. Four cases of infectious disease were reported, namely, scarlet fever 2, tuberculosis 1. pfieumonic influenza 1.” — Adopted.
