AIR RACE WITH DEATH
INJURED MAN SAVED. MAULED BY GRIZZLY BEAR. (Australian Press Association). ' Received September 12, 12.55 p.m. VANCOUVER, Sept. 11. Completing a thousand mile air race with death, Pilot W. E. Gilbert reached Vancouver to-day carrying Mr H. C: Hughes, mine superintendent, of Cotsa Lake who was seriously mauled by a grizzly bear. His condition was so critical that the physicians ordered his immediate removal to Vancouver, a nurse accompanying the injured man. Mr Hughes lost a finger, his face was badly chewed and he was bruised and cut about the body and legs. He owes his life to his presence of mind. When he met the huge animal he lay down and feigned death. The bear inched him up, threw him down and mauled him and tlien left him.
