STEAMER ON ROCKS.
CREW SAFE. Received September 12, 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 11. The coastal steamer Pappinbarra piled on the rocks this morning close to Port Stephens outer lighthouse, and is reported to be a total wreck. The crew of sixteen are safe. A sister ship, the Uralla, was wrecked at Stockton, near Newcastle, in June, 1928. The Pappinbarra was seeking shelter when she was driven on the rocks. The crew, after exciting experiences, climbed the cliffs to the lighthousekeeper’s quarters.
VESSELS OVERDUE. BELIEVED TO BE SHELTERING Received September 12, 9.45 a.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 12.
The steamer Bonalbo, which was reported to be missing last night, is safe and is sheltering at Port Stephens. Two other vessels which are overdue are the coaster Kianga and the new steamer Cobargo which is on her maiden voyage to Australia. The Cobargo is two days late from Gladstone, Queensland It is thought that both vessels are sheltering.
STRANDED LINER. (British Official Wireless.) Received September 12, 9.5 a.m. RUBGY, Sept. 11. The liner Highland Pride, of 700 tons, which stranded near Ladoa Point after leaving Vigo on Monday night on a voyage from London to Brazil and Argentina, carried 63 passengers and 89 of a crew. The vessel was specially designed for the transport of chilled and frozen meat from Argentina to England. When she stranded she was carrying 3000 tons of general cargo, including a consignment of steel rails and a number of pedigree bulls, heifers, and sheep.
