AL SMITH’S NEW JOB.
A £12,000,000 HOTEL. An 80-storey skyscraper, towering 200 feet above any existing building in Manhattan, New York, will be erected on the site of the old WaldorfAstoria Hotel, now being demolished. This announcement was made byMr A 1 Smith, the former Democratic candidate for the United States Presidency, who is receiving a salary of £IO,OOO a year as president of the new company which will build the hotel. The comapny paid £3,000,000 for the site, which covers two acres and has 200 feet frontage in Fifth Avenue. It is stated that the building alone will cost £9,000,000.
