TWO PIONEERS.

MEMORIAL DESIRED. WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. A favourable reply to representations concerning the erection of a memorial to the late Edward Gibbon Wakefield and Colonel William Wakefield was given by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle) in the House of Representatives. The question was raised by Mr .W. D. Lysnar (Gisborne) who noted that this year no provision was - made for the work in the estimates of the Internal Affairs Department, whereas fast year £SO was voted. New Zealand, he said, should be prepared to do something better than that for two of its greatest pioneers. Mr R. A. Wright (Wellington Suburbs) said it seemed an act of ingratitude if not more than £SO could be provided to keep the grave in such a condition as would make it respectable. He asked the Minister to make provision for a grant on the supplementary estimates.

The Leader of the Opposition (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) also stressed the necessity of the grave being repaired. The Minister undertook to go into the matter thoroughly. If it were considered essential, as it appeared to be, that something more should be done, appropriate provision would be made in the supplementary estimates, he ©aid.
