COMPLAINT BY RESIDENTS.
NO POWER LEAKAGE. The matter of a complaint by wireless listeners-in concerning an alleged leakage from a transformer in the vicinity of Stanley Avenue and RusGell Street was brought up at the Borough Council meeting last evening by Cr. Mansford. It was stated that the owners of sets had said their reception was harassed by crackling noises with machine-gun effect, and they maintained that tliero was a leakage of electric current. Cr. Mansford said he understood that tho borough possessed detecting apparatus. The trouble was stated not to have been apparent before the transformer was put in, and it should be minimised if possible. The borough electrical engineer (Mr J. W. Muir) stated that he had noticed interference, but did not attribute it to a power line leakage. It was more likely to be caused through the agency of the operation of a wireless set constructed by an amateur. No power arc could be created making such a noise. The matter had been discussed at the last power conference, when it was decided that, in view of the numerous complaints made, those alleging interference from power lines should substantiate that suggestion. Cr. Mansford commented that it lvas rather hard on listeners-in to have to take such action. The electrical engineer stated that steps had been taken to locate the leakage complained of, blit it could not be discoveiod. The transformer was as quiet as possible. The trouble might be due to a leaky switch in some house.
