PERSONAL.

His many friends will regret to learn that the condition of Mr T. Griggs, who is seriously ill, has taken a turn for the worse and is causing anxiety. At the meeting of the Borough Council last evening a hearty welcome was extended to Cr Eliott after his return from a six weeks’ trip to Honolulu. Mr V. G. Clift, of Palmerston North, was elected president of the New Zealand Motor Trade Association at the annual conference of that body this morning.

Mr J. H. Perrin, who held the rank of Lieutenant in the old Palmerston North Volunteer Rifles, was unavoidably absent from the re-union of that body last evening, owing to an attack* of influenza.

Mr C. R. H. Taylor, M.A., of the district office of the Lands and Survey Department, Christchurch, has been appointed librarian to the Department of Agriculture, at the head office in Wellington, and will take over his new duties early in October. Rev. J. G. S. Bartlett, at present locum tenens at Nelson Cathedral during the absence of the Dean, and formerly of Wellington, has accepted the appointment of Vicar of Stoke. Mr Bartlett will enter upon his new duties about the middle of November.

Rev. G. Y. Woodward, vicar of All Saints’, Palmerston North (until recently vicar of Karori), and Rev. P. E. James, vicar of St. Paul’s ProCathedral, have been appointed to canonries in succession to Canon O. M. Stent and Canon W. Fancourt respectively. Welcomes were extended at the general committee meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to-day to Mr D. Buchanan on his return from an extensive trip abroad, Mr M. A. Eliott, following his visit to Honolulu, and Mr C. A. J. Levett, after the latter’s recent illness.

Sympathy was expressed at the meeting of the general committee ot the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association this morning with Mr E. H. Fisher, secretary of the Feilding Association, in the loss of one of his legs. The hope was expressed that he would make a speedy recovery.

Feeling reference was made at the meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to-day to the deaths of Mr A. Cook (stock inspector at Palmerston North), Mr Melvin Cook (Kairanga) and Mr Bremer (Waverley) by the chairman (Mr J. Linklater, M.P.). He stated that the late Mr Bremer was a well-known breeder and had been a strong supporter of the association. Votes of condolence were passed with the bereaved relatives. Stating that lie fully anticipated being very much improved after leaving hospital a fortnight ago, but unfortunately was still confined to his bed with an attack of bronchitis, Mr J. M. Johnston, treasurer of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association, wrote to the general committee to-day stating that he was afraid he would have to ask for indefinite leave of absence, as he could obtain no assurance as to when he was likely to be about again. He conveyed his best wishes to the committee and secretary, and added that he greatly appreciated the large amount of sympathy extended to him by everv body. The committee granted leave of absence and wishes were expressed for Mr Johnston’s speedy recovery.
