ATTEMPT TO SAVE LIFE.

STEAMER MAKES FOR PORT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. When the steamer Tregonnell was 45 miles west of the Three Kings yesterday, bound from Westport to Nauru Island, the second engineer, Mr Reginald Nicholas, was found in a bunk bleeding profusely from a wound in the throat and a penknife was lying near his right hand. First aid was given, but as there was no doctor on board, the master decided to make for Auckland. The race to port, 274 miles away, was started yesterday morning and the Tregonnell arrived here this evening. The effort, however, was in Vain, as Mr Nicholas died half an hour before the steamer reached Auckland harbour. Deceased was a married man, aged 37 years. He came from Barry, South Wales, and had been on the Trgonnell for eight months.
