HIMATANGI TRAGEDY.

INQUIRIES BEING CONTINUED. There were no new developments in the Himatangi fire tragedy, a “Standard” representative was informed by the police to-day. Vigorous inquiries are still being conducted, and are likely to continue for some time. No definite indication can be given when the inquest is likely to be resumed. The non-discovery of Mr Westlake’s gold watch in the ruins of the fire had been occasioning some anxiety, but in conversation this morning with Mrs Judd, of Pahiatua, daughter of Mr Westlake, the “Standard’s” Foxton correspondent was informed that the watch was now safe. She is given to understand, on good authority, that Mr Westlake deposited the watch with the Bank of New South Wales at Palmerston North ,owing to the fact that lie attached aprticular value to it. It is understood that he purchased a cheap watch which he took to the farm with him.

Reference to the Himatangi tragedy was made at the meeting of the general committee i’ r the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to-day by the chairman (Mr J. Linklater, M.P.). “I think that everyone knows of the veiy serious and regrettable fire at Himatangi,” said the chairman, “and I am sure that we .all have the deepest sympathy with the relatives of those who perished. Tho late Wrs Wright was a daughter of Mr W. Remnant, a supporter of tho association for many years.” The c<- mmittee passed a vote of condolence with the bereaved relatives.
