SHOW BALL.
LOSS OF FIFTY POUNDS.
At the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association to day it was reported by the chairman (Mr J. Linklater, M.P.) that a deficit of over £SO had been incurred over the recent ball, and that the expenditure was £l7l. The chairman stated, however, that the association would not be called upon to meet the deficit, as the ball committee had decided to defray it themselves. Mr J. A. Mitchell opposed the suggestion, stating that, if any profit had accrued, it would have gone to. the association, and he moved that it stand the loss. Other members of the committee endorsed that view. Mr J. Carter congratulated the ball committee on the manner in which the ball was conducted, even thought it was not a financial success, and that he attributed to the function being held too late in the season. Mr T. R. Hodder suggested that, be-, fore any action was taken in connection with the accounts, a balance-sheet should he brought forward. The chairman expressed gratification that the efforts of the ball committee had been commended. He stated that the attendance at tho function was disappointing, and was very poor from Palmerston North. Had it not been for the patronage of visitors from outside, the ball would have been a financial disaster. He agreed that a bal-ance-sheet should be submitted, and stated that if another ball was held next year it would be earlier in tho season.
It was decided to defer further action until the balance-sheet is submitted.
