PARKING FACILITIES
PROBLEM FOR BOROUGH, revision"!OF. AREAS. The problems caused by the grow" ing volume of motor traffic in Palmerston North were referred to at the meeting of the Borough Council, last evening, when parking facilities were under discussion. Cr, Mansford stated that a numbei of shopkeepers in Georgo Street were suffering an injustice through the views of their business premises being obstructed by cars parked in front, and he asked if tire cars could not be moved elsewhere. _ Tho traffic manager (Mr P. G. Patton) stated that, no cars were parked there during the day. The Mayor agreed that a hardship was being inflicted on the shopkeepers on Saturday nights, and notice of motion was given for the abolition of the stand. Cr. Hodgens stated that the removal of the parking stand would create a precedent as other business people had complained that they were similarly affeoted. The traffic manager stated that cars could not bo parked in a oertain part of the street owing to tho necessity of keeping firo plugs clear. Cr. Mansford said he was aware that that was a matter which had caused concern to the Fire Brigade superintendent. . . The Mayor expressed the opinion that the time was coming when a parking place would have to be provided near the Memorial in the Square. Cr. Eliott agreed that the stands would have to be moved further from tho business area. Cr. Mansford moved, and the Mayor seconded, a resolution that the transit committee take into consideration the question of rearranging the whole of the parking areas, and this was carried. , , ~ “I certainly think that there should be some method of car parking,” commented Cr. Mansford when the matter of providing discs to indicate the space which should be occupied by each car was under discussion. The Mayor suggested that the matter be referred to the transit committee. , Cr. Hodgens said tho matter had been dealt with on numerous occasions, and it was a costly thing to tike steps to make selfish motorists exceeding a fair amount of space to park correctly. In time, they would be educated by the traffic inspectors.
