RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE

{By “Binocular.”)

Racing at Avondale and Ashburton on Saturday.

The two-year-old Solferino —Satisfaction fillv in D. Campbell’s stable in the south will race under the name of Satisfy.

F. Waddell, who recently set up as a trainer in Hawke’s Bay, has retired from the game and will in future figure as an hotelkeeper.

Kick Off, the winner of the Higgio Handicap on the second day at Wanganui, returned a race record of 2.8 2-5, the previous best having been by Beacon Light in 1926 when ho required 2.8 4-5.

The Australian-bred two-year-old by Hades from The Kettle in J. Cathro’s stable at Avondale has had the name of Skimmer bestowed upon him. He is 6tated to bo a promising youngster.

Dutch Money is stated to bo putting plenty of dash into her training work in preparation for Ashburton. With the Dunedin Guineas to follow, her form at the South Canterbury fixture will be watched with interest.

Jovial is reported to be in work again in the far south. He is a proficient jumper, but has failed to stay and, as he is now in his twelfth year, his prospects cannot bo viewed in a very promising light.

After racing at Dannevirke, where ho ran well without being able to actually get on the winning list, Royal Damon went off colour and it ha 6 been decided to put him aside for a time and give him every opportunity to come right.

A feature of the Tattcrsall’s Club meeting at Randwick was thf> success of New Zealand jhorses, Ceremony, Nightmaroh and First Acre getting on the winning list, while Cimabuc, Phar Lap, Tidal and Paquito filled places.

It was reported rccontly that Pink Coat had met with a mishap and that it was unlikely that he would mako the northern trip as had been intended. However, his name figures in the list for the Great Northern Guineas so there is still a prospect that the Hunting Song colt will be on hand.

Included in the nominations for the Geraldine meeting are Mr W. 11. Ballinger’s horses, Black Mint, Royal Game, Handsome and Fallow. Mr Ballinger sent a team on tho southern spring circuit two years ago, with fair success, and he apparently contemplates another invasion this year.

There is a possibility that tho Psychology—Orofino filly Flair will bo taken to Ellerslie to contest the Avondale Guineas, in which event Red Heckle will also make the trip to compete in handicap contests.

Southern reports mention that First Sight has had a recurrence of the lameness which necessitated his retirement last season, and it is probable that he will have to be again spelled. Thei Gay Lad gelding had been showing promise of bejng an even better horse this season so the mishap is most unfortunate.

There are few racehorse owners in the Dominion who have had such a good share of fortune’s favours as ha 6 Mr H. A. Knight, of Canterbury. With a couple

of brood mares, Madrid and Melody, he has in tho course of a few years bred such good ones as Malaga (Auckland Cup winner), Zaragoza and Paquito, and ako Ballymena and Limerick. Tho total amount of stake money won by Ballymena and Limerick probably amounts to an Australian and New Zealand record for two horses the progeny of one mare.

The three-year-old Phar Lap, who ran the Australian crack, Mollison, to half a length in tho Chelmsford Stakes, was bred in South Canterbury by Mr A. F. Roberts. He is by Night Raid from Entreaty, by Winkio from Prayer Wheel, by Pilgrim’s Progress from tho Maxim mare, Catherine Wheel, whose earlier progeny included Treadmill, a high-class galloper and a good stayer, also a very successful sire. Phar Lap realised 160 guineas when sold as a"yearling at Trentham. He won a maiden two-year-old race in Sydney last season, while this season ho has shown good form on several occasions. Saturday’s effort, however, was his best. Ho had several three-year-olds behind him, and his performance will bring him into prominence for the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby, the distance of which should suit him, as he appears to show excellent promiso as a stayer.

One of the most interesting yearlings at tho Elderslio Stud is a filly by Heroic from the English Stud mare who is again in foal to the samo sire, comments a southern writer. The filly, who shows much quality and is difficult to fault, is the first of Heroic’s progeny to make an appearance in Now Zealand. Estlior is the dam of 1.0. U., by Paper Money, a good winner last season in Australia, and apparently Mr J. G. Duncan has a big opinion of the mare, as ho booked her twice to Heroic at a feo of 200 guineas in each case.

In summing up the yearling salos in tho world’s most important markets last year, an English writer states that everywhere records were made. Whether money is short or not, thero is always plenty available for the purchase of blood atock, and when one comes to think of the millions of men, women, and children throughout the world who, in one way or another, derive ■ their livings from it, there will bo few to deny that it is one of tho world’s largest industries.

Obviously with the idea of breeding another Winalot (states an Australian writer) Mr J. F. Foster, the Cullengoral, Gulgong, studmastcr, who secured Rossendale at the Kingsfield dispersal sale, has purchased the Malt King mare, Princess Volga, from the executors of Mr H. Chisliolm, and he is mating her, most likely this season, with the St. Frusquin horse. Mr Foster has also purchased Volga Maid, a half-sister by Limelight to Winalot.

Mr G. D. Greenwood’s Australian-bred two-year-old Ozone, by Saltash from Aries, is on the easy lkt. He showed some promise in a few early sprints at Riccarton, but he is a big fellow who should bo benefited by time, and apparently a patient policy is to be pursued with him, as ho is to be reserved for the autumn. His stableuiate, Praise, by Limond from Eulogy, remains in work, but her tasks are of a light description at present.
