THE WEATHER

GENERAL FORECAST. A pressure distribution of the westerly type prevails from Western Australia to beyond New Zealand. A series of depressions is moving in southern latitudes, while barometers are high in the north. Winds between north-west and south-west with northwpsterlies prevailing •in Cook Strait; mainly moderate to strong, but reaching gale force at time’s in and south of Cook Strait. Seas rough on the West Coast and off-shore south of Castlepoint; elsewhere smooth to moderate. Northwest to westerly winds in the Eastern Tasman Sea, strong to gale force in the southern portion, with rough seas; moderate in the northern portion, with smooth to moderate .seas. Weather mainlyxfair-to fine, and mild at first, but becoming unsettled, in the western districts with rain, some heavy falls on the West Soast of the South Island. Later, conditions becoming more generally unsettled. DISTRICT REPORT. ' CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS. The Government meteorologist telegrapted to-day:—The indications are for northern winds, moderate to strong, to strong to gale after about 16 hours, and backing to west to south. The weather will probably prove squally and changeable and at times showery. Expect mild_ conditions, but the weather will become colder after about 16 hours. The barometer is rising.
