Received September 18, lO a.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 17. A message from Ventura, California, states: “Hundreds of men and trucks over a 50 miles’ front are endeavouring to stem a line of fire which is sweeping down the slopes of a sulphur mountain and advancing towards the rich Ventura avenue of oil-fields.
“Despite supreme efforts to hold back the flames, damage amounting to two million dollars has already been done to the scattered oil equipment. '‘Many refugees are fleeing from the area.
“Two hundred fire fighters to-day escaped death from the flames only by a slight shift in the wind. The wind turned the fire, which was about to trap them.”
