From the "Valuation Department advising paymont of balance of subsidy on general rates collected in respect ot the year ended 31st March, 1929, amounting to £437 65.-—Received. From the Public Works Department advising paymont of subsidy on main highways, amounting to £829 Is 6d.— From the Main Highwaj’s Board forwarding authorities in respect of maintenance work to be carried out on the Nos. 52 and 377 main highways.— Received. From the Inspector of Health forwarding his report on work performed in the county from Ist M.ay, 1929, to 31st July, 1929.—Received. From Mr D. G. McKay-Turnbull requesting permission to re-erect a boundary fence on a portion of the Mangarere Road formation.—Granted, tlio work to bo carried out to the satisfaction of tlio overseer and to remain during the pleasure of the council. From Mr F. H. R. Gorringe requesting permission to re-erect a boundary fence, on a portion of the l’otaka Road formation.—Granted on terms similar to the preceding application. • From the Canterbury Progress League requesting support in the matter of protesting against tlio proposals of the Government to withhold the statutory grants to the main highways funds.—Tlio letter was received, it being stated that the £200,000 grant to the hgiliways. fund had been reinstated. GENERAL. The disposal of the horse now at Rangiwahia was left in the hands of Crs Shaw and Wood and the overseer. It was decided to call tenders for the supply of metal to certain roads in the country aiid also for the taking off of bad corners on other roads. BANK BALANCES. The finances of- the council to date, September 17, were shown in credit as follow:—County fund account, £976 3s 9d; employees’ accommodation special loan account, £726 9s lid; Kimbolton cemetery account, £26 Is Id; land fund account (No. 2), £345 15s 3dj_ Vinegar Hill bridge loan account, £l7Ol 16s; Waituna cemetery account, £lO 13s lid. STATEMENT OF RATES. General 1929-30.—Struck, £11,434 9s 9d; paid and rebate £4827 Is 7d; balanco £6607 8s 2d. OVERSEERS’ REPORTS. ■The overseer for the'.northern ridings (Mr F.. H. * Eggers) reported as follows : —Cheltenham riding : During the past month 272 cubic yards of maintenance metal have been delivered on Kimbolton Road (No. 52 main highway) from the Kiwitea Stream. Willows have been planted at the approach to the new bridge at Beaconsfield, and tlie metalling will be commenced in a few days’ time. McKay’s, Cheltenham Gross and KimboL ton Roads have been trimmed with the power graders, and the bends on Hayne’s and McKay’s Roads widened and metalled. The usual maintenance work oh all roads has also received attention. Kiwitea riding: Fifty cubic yards of maintenance metal have been delivered on the No. 52 main highway for repair work. The usual maintenance wojk has been attended to and the principal roads trimmed with the power grader. Waituna riding: The metalling of Kiwi-tea-Tapuae Road is almost completed, the contractor having delivered 426 cubic yards to date. The work of widening a few very narrow bends on Mangipipi Road is now in progress and should be completed in a few days’ time. On the Rewa side of the riding the roadman has been engaged repairing culverts, cleaning out watertables .and removing slips. Tlie main highway section of road in the riding has also received attention in the way of pot-hole repairs and the cleaning out of water-tables. A start'will be made shortly with the work of widening bends on Rewa Hill. Ongo riding: The roadman has attended to the cleaning out of drains and watertables, also repairs to road ■ surfaces. A small 9-ineh pipe culvert'has been renewed with concrete pipes. The broken culvert at the entrance to the property occupied by the roadman has been renewed with timber. Potholes have been repaired on Waituna Valley Road. Kimbolton riding: A few yards of maintenance metal have been carted out for pot-hole repairs. A very dangerous bend on the boundary between the Kimbolton and Peep-o-Day ridings has been widened and a considerable improvement effected. The work of celiverihg maintenance metal on John’s Road is now in progress and should be completed in a few days’ time. The usual maintenance work on all roads has also received attention, and the narrow bend on Mcßeth’s Road cut back. Peep-o-Day riding: The work of widening the damaged sections of No. 52 main highway is now completed. At present the roadmen are stripping and getting metal ready for carting out, which will be commenced during the current month. , On the western section of the riding the surface man has attended to general improvements to all roads in the way of cleaning out water-tables and repairs to road surfaces. —Adopted. NORTHERN RIDINGS.

Mr C. Stent, overseer for the northern ridings, made the following report: —Rangiwahia riding: One hundred cubic yards of metal have been put out on Mangahuia East, Te Para Para and Main South Roads for potholes and weak places. Otamakapua Road has trimmed with the grader. The drains between the sawmill and Pemberton corner have been cleaned out. ' Pakihikura riding. Ninety yards of fine river metal have been put out on the road between Otara and Mangamako Junction. Several slips came down on Peka and Sandon Block Roads and these have been attended to. Good progress has been made with the work of repairing Tricker’s bridge. Two spans (one 30 feet and the other 14 feet) have had to be renewed. Hautapu riding: Five hundred and seventy-five cubic yards of metal have been put out on Kawhatau and Mangawharariln Roads. On Kawhatau Road, between. Potaka Junction and Hamilton’s, about 3

miles have been dressed with river grit at the rate of 2 yards per chain and trimmed with the grader. . A quaintity .of pit and river grit has been tipped in convenient heaps on the roadside for future use.—Adopted.
