DISASTROUS FIRES.
OIL WELLS DESTROYED.
(Australian Press Association.) Received September 18, 10.45 a.m. NJSVV YORK, Sept. 17. . A message from Los Angeles states that tho disastrous fires continue unchecked. The total damage is well above three million dollars. The Ventura blaze is running wild before a brisk wind and has already destroyed 95 oil wells. Hope is given up for the 49 other wells. The fire fighters are attempting desperately to save the rich Ventura field three, miles beyond. Women and girls are aiding the boys and men. All have been working for many hours. The fire destroyed valuable ranches and threatened the town of Santa Paula, which is deserted. There is another roaring furnace outside San Diego. The city’s watershed is threatened. Acres have been burnt ■ apd numerous homes wrecked. The hillsides are covered with charred bodies of live stock, wild game and poultry.
