PERSONAL.
The president of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, Mr S. Barry of Auckland), arrived in Palmerston North this morning. Dr. Douglas Swift, of Christchurch, has been appointed assistant medical superintendent of the Grey Hospital, vice Dr. Wilkinson, resigned.
The death has occurred of Rev.: W. Bedell Stanford, rector of Wishaw, England, who from 1882 to 1890 was a canon of the Christchurch Cathedral. Major G. R. Blackett, M.C., of Auckland, has been posted to the retired list with the rank of major. Major Blackett, who served for 23 years, has a distinguished war record. Rev. W. M. Holland, formerly minister of the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Church, Wellington, has accepted an invitation to Trinity Congregational Church, Walthamstow, England. Mr Itoyden McDowell, manager of the Wellington office of an oil company, is a visitor to Palmerston North in connection with the motor trade conference. Mr McDowell, who is a former resident of Palmerston North, is an ex-pupil of the Boys’ High School.
A cable message- from Sydney announces the death of Rev. R. J. Middleton, aged 80. Mr Middleton was one of the oldest Baptist ministers in New South Wales, and was senior minister in point of continuous service, having spent 56 years in the Baptist ministry. He leaves two daughters, Mesdames Austin and Ings, who /reside in New Zealand.
The resignation of Mr T. Chipper, assistant on the staff of the Foxton District High School, was received at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. Mr Chipper has accepted an a6sistantship at the Levin District High School. During his . connection with the Foxton School Mr Chipper has taken a keen interest in the school games and as a teacher possesses high qualifications and his departure at the end of the month will be' regretted l\y the staff and scholars (writes our Foxton correspondent). , Mr Windeyer, K.C., who has been announced as a People’s Party candidate in the Federal election campaign in Australia, is one of- Sydney’s leading barristers. Althougu little known personally in New Zealand, his name is familiar to golfers in this country, for he is a part donor of the KirkWindeyer Cup, which is played for annually between Australia and the Dominion. Some months ago Mr Windeyer was doing relieving work as a temporary Judge on the State Court Bench, most of hie time being occupied in dealing with arrears of business on circuit. A few weeks ago he saw the New Zealanders play in the KirkTTir.deyer contest in Melbourne.
