THE DARDANELLES
BRITISH NAVAL SQUADRON. FIRST VISITATION SINCE 1922. TURKISH INVITATION. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received September 19, 9.5 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 18. The battleship Queen Elizabeth, the aircraft carrier Courageous, three destroyers, and tire Commander-in-Chief’s yacht Bryony will, at the invitation of the Turkish Government, arrive at Constantinople on October 12, for a stay of nine days. The arrangements made provide for a visit of the Commander-in-Chief to the Prime Minister at Angora, and his reception by President Mustapha Kemal Pasha in or near Constantinople. This will be the first occasion on which a British naval sqaudron has passed through the Dardanelles since the crisis of 1922. The Queen Elizabeth, the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, played an important part in the operations against the Dardanelles during the war. The Courageous is Britain’s latest aircraft carrier, is of 18,600 tons, with a speed of 31 knots.
