RUGBY FOOTBALL

KIA TOA AND OLD BOYS. TO-MORROW’S CONTEST. Although football enthusiasts will be catered for yet another two or three weeks, tho approaching close of the 1929 season is signalled by the staging at the Showgrounds, tomorrow afternoon, of the final in tho “sudden death” competition which each year attends the inter-club series. On this occasion tho final will bo contested by the two local teams, Kia Toa and Old Boys, who have furnished enthusiasts with some stirring battles in the past. Peculiarly enough, Old Boys annexed championship honours this year, but the blacks had to accept defeat from Kia Toa at both their meetings, the scoring contributions of 11—3 and 13 —3 being in favour of tho double blues in each instance. The two teams did not meet in the third and final round in tho inter-chib competitions as the direct result of Old Boys securing a points advantage which rendered the playing of tho game unnecessary. Many enthusiasts had looked forward to that third meeting, but while they were disappointed on that occasion they will be rewarded tomorrow.

Naturally. Ivia Toa will strive to carry the day in order that they can wipe out the blemish of defeat in the inter-club series, but Old Boys will be waging a still greater battle, for, apart from endeavouring to acquire the dual honours of the season, the blacks will be striving to break the long list of victories which have passed the way of Kia Toa at their expense during the past four or five seasons. The records disclose that not on one single occasion m the 1928 or 1927 season did Old Boys carry the day against their fellow town team, while in 1926 Old Boys won but one ol the four matches wherein these two clubs were the principals; yet, as has been instanced this season. Old Boys proved able to secure the season’s honours as the result of Kia Toa being accounted tor by other teams who had to bow their heads to Old Boys. The coincidence nngnt well be carried further, for the direct reverse was apparently forthcoming in the 1925 season when at four meetings each club won on two ocacsions and Kia Toa won the championship and Old Boys the “sudden-death” competition. Thus, to-morrow will find the one team striving to maintain its good record and the other to break it and the battle for honours will no doubt be followed by a record crowd for both combinations are capable of rising to great heights on occasion. The teams are:—
