CRIME IN SYDNEY
RECENT ROBBERIES'. BANDIT ARRESTED. TRACED BY SPECTACLE CASE. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 20, 9.45 a.m v SYDNEY, Sept. 20. Detectives yesterday arrested a man in connection with the robbery at Rozelle on the evening of September 13. When that evening he was surprised by the police the masked bandit dropped a spectacle case, and this led to his arrest. The case bore the embossed name of a New Zealand maker. A cablegram was sent to the New Zealand police asking them to interview the optician who supplied the glasses and ascertain the owner. A return cable message gave tfie name of the man, who had served a sentence in New Zealand. This man is an Australian with a record of crime committed here. Yesterday the police saw the man and, to allay his suspicions, one of them stimulated drunkenness as the suspect was approached. He was arrested and charged with shooting Constable Grinham, with intent to murder.
. On the evening of September 13 thero were several hold-ups in the Sydney suburbs by armed bandits. At Rozello a bandit who had held up the proprietor of a 6tore and stolen £2O was chased by the police. A gun duel followed; a dozen shots were fired and Constable Grinham was shot through the groin, and later taken to hospital.
