THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST. A depression was crossing tho South Island yesterday afternoon, a southerly change and rising pressure having passed Dunedin. A moderate anti-cyclone covers Eastern Australia. Winds westerly at first in Cook Strait and eastern districts north of Canterbury, but southwest to southerly winds, gradually becoming general and of moderate to strong force. Seas rough on the West Coast and becoming rough . south of Castlepoint; moderate elsewhere. Moderate to strong south-west to southerly winds and moderate to rather rough seas in the Eastern Tasman Sea. Weather changeable, with unsettled, showery conditions extending from western arid southern districts over most of the Dominion. Temperatures becoming cold. Some snow and inland frosts in the south.
DISTRICT REPORT. IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED. The Government meteorologist wired to-day:—The indications are for southerly winds, moderate to strong, and decreasing later. The weather will probably be cold and changeable. Misty rain is to be expected, but conditions will improvo soon. The barometer is rising. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon.—lft. 9in.
