DEVASTATING FIRES.
GREAT DAMAGE IN AMERICA. (Australian Press Association). VANCOUVER, Sept. 18. The latest reports from Ventura and San Diego state that in the fire areas to-night widespread stretches of steam, after heavy rains, quenched the flames, which have done enormous damage. San Diego especially will suffer from devastated watersheds, and the city probably will remain without a proper supply until the trees grow again. Forest fires in Oregon and Washington State are increasing before hot driving winds. Several wide areas are now burning.
