HIGH SCHOOLS
MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Palmerston North High Schools was held last evening, the chairman, Mr W. R. Birnie presiding. Others present were Mrs Aitcnison, and Messrs M. H. Oram, AV.L. Fitzherbert and J. W. Rutherfurd. Mis M. Rhodes (principal of the Girls High School) and Mr J. Murray (rector of the Boys’ High School) were also in attendance. The rector of the Boys’ High School reported that school resumed after the term holidays on Tuesday, September 17. On August 23 the first fifteen played their annual match with Napier Boys’ High School for the Poison Banner, winning by 14 points to 8. On August 24 they journeyed to Gisborne as tho guests of the Gisborne High School and Poverty Bay Rugby Union and played a match against Gisborne High School on August 26, losing 14-8. The principal of the Girls’ High School (Mrs M. Rhodes) reported that school closed on August 23 for the second term holidays and reopened on September 17. The roll number at the beginning of the third term was 243. The | playing fields were all in good order and I the grounds were looking well. The ! gate opening on to the hockey field had been broken and cattle were making their way in. The caretaker had blocked it temporarily. There were at present fifteen girls in residence at the hostel, seven being full term boarders and eight weekly boarders. TECHNICAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Technical School Committee was also held last evening, Mr Birnie presiding. Others present were Mrs Aitchison, Messrs. YV. L. Fitzherbert, M. H. Oram and J. W. Rutherfurd. The director (Mr G. G. Hancox) was also in attendance. The director reported that, after a fortnight's vacation, evening classes resumed on Monday, September 9, and day classes on September 10. Mr F. C. Renyard visited the school from August 19 to 22. At the examination for Pitman’s speed typewriting certificates held in May, passes gained were as follow: —Evening classes: Junior grade, 7 (one with distinction); senior grade, 4. Hay classes: Junior grade, 7 (two with distinction); senior grade, o. As the delegate of the committee, the director added that from September 10 to 13 he attended the conference of the Technical Education Association of New Zealand. ihe lawsonianas had been planted at the grounds and the gates placed in position. Tho fence was Toeing'erected. The motor mower had come to hand. The sealing of the boys’ yard adjoining the new workshops had been completed. Two of the day girls, Neta Hosking and Jean Bwver, played for the Manawatu representative basket ball team at the New Zealand tournament held recently in Christchurch. The report was received;
