SCHOOL BALL

HOKOWHITU FANCY CARNIVAL. SUCCESSFUL - FUNCTION. In a true carnival spirit, tho children of the Hokowhitu School thoroughly enjoyed themselves last evening on the occasion of tlieir annual hall, held in the Empire Hall. Alueli ingenuity was shown in tlio frocking and the radiant faces of the youngsters must have fully compensated everyone who contributed towards making the function the distinct success it was, especially the headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) and teachers and tho committee secretary, Air T. J. Smith. The children were provided with a dainty supper, tho room being decorated with tlio school colours. When tho youngsters had vacated the floor the adults danced to tho excellent orchestra. Air G. D. Pattle, chairman of the school committee, extended a warm welcome to the children and trusted that they would thoroughly enjoy themselves. He also thanked all who had contributed towards making the function such a big success. In declaring the ball open, tho Alayor (Air A. J. Graham) congratulated the parents and children on the excellent frocking and lie hoped that the carnival, which was an obvious success, would be thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, Airs Graham was unable to be present owing to illness, hut she had not forgotten the children in whom she was always greatly interested, and Mr Graham conveyed a message of love and goodwill from Airs Graham. Having impressed upon the children tho necessity to remember the encouragement they received from their parents and teachers, and the many sacrifices made on their behalf, Air Graham urged them to take full advantage of the excellent educational system in order to fit themselves for the bigger things of life and their subsequent responsibilities as good citizens.
